"This is the worst," a Democratic friend exclaimed over the phone on Tuesday, the first day back at work after the Memorial Day weekend. I knew without asking what he meant -- the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico that dominated television coverage and was into its second month with no quick solution in sight. * They haven't built a popular new television program around it -- yet. No one has created a new media franchise for himself out of it. There isn't a name for it that has become part of popular culture.
I was thinking back to when another Democratic president, Jimmy Carter, found himself stymied in another seemingly endless ordeal. Iranian militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 officials and workers hostage for 444 days, while the United States was helpless to free them.
Many of us recall the event by the name that became attached to it: "America Held Hostage." That was the title ABC News slapped on its half-hour news update that aired each night, with Ted Koppel as anchor. The show later became the long-running program "Nightline."
This is when you know you are truly harpooned, when your problem has become someone else's meal ticket.
As sinister as the jet stream of escaping oil and gas looks via the underwater camera in the gulf, Barack Obama has not yet moved into the category of the late-night patsy that Jimmy Carter became. The Iranians were more clever, or diabolical, in exploiting their hostages than the restrained BP executives or their enviro foes are in this situation. ad_icon
Obama keeps popping up in new settings, sounding as if he is in command, and he has refused to be confined to the White House as Carter was by the hostage crisis.

I just thought of one; Bay Of Rigs.
Fox needs to start a show “Gulf Watch : Day 50”.
He’s WAY beyond that moment if you ask me..
Day 44
Maybe Broder is looking for a rabid rabbit episode. ???
Nearing? I thought that passed after the last screw up now everyone is convinved he is completely incompetant.
OOPPPPSSSS convinved=convinced
Fox needs to start a show Gulf Watch : Day 50.
Hey, I like your thinking.
Jimmy Carter is pleased.
He’s worse than Carter and he’s already passed that point. Tie him to every RAT running in November; he’s an anchor.
This is just Broder fantasizing that things aren’t as bad for his side as they might be, and that people really aren’t saying, “Carter II.”
Sad, really.
Obama just had a moment that would embarrass even Carter himself.

Uh, Iranian muzzie militants have been holding three American BACKPACKERS hostage since last July and are suggesting they could be swapped for Iranian TERRORISTS incarcerated in the US.
I guess their parents must be retarded, or Democrats, because they don't seem to care that Obama is doing NOTHING to gain their release.
...it’s good news that Broder would dare to write a word of doubt about Obama...he’s the WAPO’s ultimate inside-the-Beltway liberal Dem...the rats always get nervous before they abandon the sinking ship.
"Daddy, did you plug the hole?"
They could simply recycle “America Held Hostage” to describe the Obama Regime.
Darn. That was one of my favorite songs before today.
I gotta admit I would prefer to see them held until President Palin forces their release myself. The parents would be forced to say thank you on camera. I can hardly wait until they spit those 'thank yous' out.
Just how stupid did the kids have to be to be backpacking where they did?
Obama’s Carter moment will be followed by the new Reagan Administration aslo known as the Palin Administration.
In a cabinet meeting discussing the Iranian hostage rescue mission, 3P(Plains Peanut Panderer) asked that the rescue be implemented in a way that doesn’t harm any Iranians. Obama made a similar request saying he didn’t want any fish in the gulf to get hurt.
Or maybe just "Bama's Bunghole" for short
We have men and women dying in war, Iran nuking up, the Middle East headed for war, the Gulf spill getting worse, the economy in the toilet, unemployment sky high, States going bankrupt, terrorists coming across from Mexico, our enemies laughing at the eunuch in our White House, and this POS is acting like his reign is one big party. What an arrogant sleazebag!
You pretty much nailed it
Yes, he is..... LOL
The first Eunuch-American president.
Obama’s Gulf diaster has a nice ring to it?
Not bad. We need a FReeper contest to pick the name for this crisis.
Thanks,I think your right. A contest would be in order.
Couldn’t have said it better myself! Kudos!
We don't have a hostage crisis. Yet.
The difference between a Carter hostage crisis and a BO hostage crisis is that BO would side with the captors.
It should have been the day Air Force One terrorized Manhatten - IMHO ;)
He already did, until the leader of a Navy SEAL team decided to end that particulat episode of madness on the high seas.
Come to think of it, this IS America held hostage all over again.

At least Carter had an entertaining brother.
0bama's brothers can't enter the country.
Could this be....wait for it....
O’bamas ‘Tar baby’?
...sorry, I had to do it....
Personally, I think Obama is already worse than Carter.
Carter was a weak leader and made many bad decisions, but he at least tried to lead the country and he did have some small successes - the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, a slight reduction of debt as % of GDP, sending Harold Denton to Three Mile Island. Carter was also a key force behind the deregulation of the airline industry, which led to enormous benefits in the 1980s under President Reagan.
Obama has done none of that. He’s antagonized Israel for no purpose, debt is higher than at anytime in our nation’s history, and he has completely fumbled the BP oil spill. And he’s only halfway through his term. And frankly, I think Obama’s idea of leadership begins and ends with implementing his agenda.
Doesn't need one. "The BP Oil Spill"--you say it and everyone knows what you're talking about.
Not true, CNN 10pm-12pm EST.
David, the Dean of Washington Journalists, going senile? Obama was singing along with "Hey Jude" last night. Friday morning he is campaigning at a truck dealership, meeting with a soccer team, flying down to the gulf for a few hours to talk to somebody or other about the spill I guess, then flying back to D.C. Last weekend he spent partying in Chicago. One venue was across the street from Farrakhan's operation.
Oh..and his wife...in the morning she kicks off a "Chefs Move to Schools" program. She's flying in top chefs from Chicago to advise on revamping school lunches.
I think Jimmy still wins worst, by default, Obama is not even trying to be a president. He’s more like a party animal living in the white house, not a president. At least Jimmy tried (and failed).
It is good to be the King (and Queen). It’s like the Obama’s won the Price is Right and now get to party at the White House for 4 years. Sure hope we all live thru this.
