Summer travelers may discover a world of pain
Tribune Newspapers ^ | June 5, 2010 | Julie Johnsson

Skyrocketing airfares, new rules governing flight delays and clogged roads for drivers threaten to make this a summer of discontent for anyone with a yen for travel.

With the economy recovering and the employment outlook more secure, people are again plotting summer adventures.

They could be in for a rough ride. Demand for air travel appears likely to far outstrip the available supply of airline seats, making this a bad summer for bargain hunters and travelers with short fuses. Travel experts predict most flights will be sold out as families take their vacation getaways during June and July.

"Consumers can comfortably be rest-assured that it's going to be uncomfortable," said Michael Boyd, president of Boyd Group International, an Evergreen, Colo.-based aviation consulting firm.

Here’s my take if Bush was in office: “With the growing frustration of the economic picture, Americans are reluctantly opting to take vacations for the sole purpose of escaping their daily woes.”

Translation:

"I'm a liberal writing for a liberal paper. My job is to convince the uneducated masses that Barack Obama (peace be upon him) has saved us from economic collapse and that any further problems can be blamed directly on the previous administration."

Who wants to bet me that in late September we see economic statements such as, "...the airlines were hurt by an unexpected drop in vacation travel this past summer." or maybe, "...the hotel industry is offering deep discounts in order to fill rooms which were vacant during the summer travel season."? Ahhh. then again maybe in between castigating the oil industry, playing golf, shooting hoops and white house parties, Skippy is focusing like a laser on JOBS.

Skyrocketing airfares
Skyrocketing? BS. I've been flying since the mid 60s and today's airfares are a huge bargain compared to what they were back in the 70s and early 80s.

Re road travel — anyone have a link to see where construction delays are on the interstates that span Illinois, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Missouri. We’re making a big loop to the west to visit our daughter.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that our 2 weeks in Cape May, NJ, in August and September aren't marred by tar balls washing up on the beach.

I may have to take a page out of Obama's book, and instead of worrying about the oil spill's impact, just play golf instead.

For each state, Google “department of transportation contruction”

For example, here’s the map for Illinois:

Some segments of the travel industry improve as folks go down-market. For example, campground bookings in Massachusetts are up 16% over last year. Somme middle class families that normally rent a beach cottage for a couple of weeks are renting/buying used RVs and going camping instead.

Prices are UP because airlines cut the SUPPLY lower than DEMAND. Note this doesn’t mean they are making more REVENUE. Demand is DOWN due to the economy. The article is 100% Barry Soetoro aka BS.

Here’s my take

Here's mine: If travel numbers are down it's the fault of the airlines........

I’d bet that some creative Googleizing on the subject, state by state, might get you some good results.

To bad that you can’t take a trip at the tax payers expense every couple of weeks like mac daddy and in between play golf or attend parties also at the tax payers expense.

Hope you have a pleasant vacation, good luck.
