HARTFORD, Conn.

Connecticut elections officials are investigating whether Weston businessman Peter Schiff violated state laws by using out-of-state workers to collect signatures to petition his way onto the Republican primary ballot for U.S. Senate.

In a complain obtained Monday by The Associated Press, James Bancroft, who said he was a founding member of the Hartford tea party group, claimed he was approached by a Schiff supporter outside a store in Newington last week and asked to sign a petition. Bancroft said he struck up a conversation with the worker, who said he was from Montana. Bancroft filed the complaint with the State Elections Enforcement Commission on Friday.

No illegal aliens aren’t good but I didn’t read that Peter Schiff had illegal aliens collecting signatures for him. However I don’t see any rational reason for not allowing volunteers whatever state they are from to collect signatures provided they are the signatures of CT citizens. Does CT law ban all involvement of outside organizations in electoral related efforts? I doubt it. This is just one of those stupid laws primarily designed to maintain power in the hands of the powerful. I’m not a big fan of irrational nitpicking type of laws. You have ever right to file a complaint but it is a very petty thing.

Better a Virginian than a Masshole. It is a different altitude, a big city is 60K and there ain’t to many of them. As an exiled Idahoan it is comfortable but takes getting used to.

Is anyone up to date on his history ? What’s Schiff like ?

He's a one issue person. Speaks only of the economy unless he is asked to comment on other issues. He supports legalizing marijuana and supports abortion in the first trimester.

Schiff is personally pro choice, like the lady who won the GOP nomination. The difference is, I would actually believe Schiff when he says he wants to turn these matters over to the states.

That is an acceptable pro life position, coming from a libertarian. Coming from a politician who has shown no respect whatsoever for the Constitution, or federalism, its crap, however.

And, also, you are just helping the local GOP to retain control over the nomination process. They use a gazillion laws, breaks, and other obstacles to keep a tight lid on who even gets close to getting into power.

On top of that, you don’t know that he was hired by Schiff, or that he isn’t a legal resident, who perhaps moved to the state to support Schiff.

Clear, principled speakers who know their stuff like Schiff inspire people to make sacrifices.

I really don’t know why you are so excited about what you did. McMahon is polling even worse than Schiff against the Dem candidate....

Paid signature gatherers have to be local?
I got to ask Hillery, the World’s smartest woman, what the sense of such a stupid law is.

In the Dem Party’s case, why require paid signature gatherers to be local, just to collect signatures from non-residents, illegals, felons, the dead, peoples’ pet animals, and imaginary beings such as Mickey Mouse, etc?

I don't embrace a couple of his positions but think he is dead on about the economy. So what's not to like about him?

Read post #69.

I want someone that is intelligent, understands economics, and knows what needs to be done to fix this mess that the great Zero in office right now has created.

Schiff is one of the leaders of the liberty movement, someone we badly need in office today. You can keep supporting right wing big government. I’ll choose the candidate that is for liberty.

Mega dittos. I totally agree with you. I like Schiff very much and believe he would be an excellent senator because he has a great understanding of economics (Austrian). He's also very articulate and can convey complex economic issues in an easy to understand manner. Finally, he's a strong advocate of small government, individual rights, and supports adherence to the Constitution and the principals of the Founding Fathers.

I am not a resident of Connecticut, but I want Schiff to win the primary. We will need him given the economic train wreck that is upon us.

Race, C’mon. Shiff was gonna get clobbered anyway. He is certainly knowledgeable on economics - I’ve heard him speak - and could serve a useful function to pressure Linda from the right. Unfortunately, I’ll have to vote for her in the general, since I couldn’t ever vote for Dick the “War Hero” but this is just stirring up a controversy where letting nature take its course would have accomplished the same thing. Bad show, regardless of whether you’re right or wrong on the law — which is not so clear.

I read Schiff often on his economic/political articles.
He makes a whole lot of refreshing sense to me.
Me being a Conservative that is.
Doubt a Liberal would do other than detest him.

"There are things outside of economics like culture for example some thing that Libertarians miss mostly."

In a free society, "culture" is not a political issue. The culture just reflects the individual choices of all the people in the society. In a free society, if you don't like the culture you try to educate and convince people to share your values. You don't impose your choices with the power of government.

You can't both have a "culture" imposed by governemnt, and be a free people. Make your choice.

Morals aren’t defined by the law. Abortion is legal but is hardly moral. We have laws crafted to elevate certain races, ethnic groups, genders, and even sexual behaviors above others that fall outside the category which in a free society that is supposed to guarantee equal standing under the law clearly does not. It seems to me that the point of a law such as in the case of signature gathering for ballot inclusion is about the validity of the signatories not the signature gatherer. Most of these types of laws are designed to make it more difficult for those who aren’t members of the accepted political class to get on the ballot. They use arcane conditions to protect their power. I don’t support that nor do I support stupidity in the name of the all mighty and supreme “Law” which in this age has come to mean whatever the hell the powerful want it to.
