The new sensational details of the Smolensk disaster: military airport, where he had landed the plane with the president, does not have its own weather station.

Control Tower uses data from the remote station by up to 10 kilometers, in addition located at a different height. This means that Russian investigators had no accurate data about the weather, which prevailed on April 10 at the airport and handed Polish pilots inaccurate parameters. - It's grotesque. They forecast the eye - says the fact George Polack (49 l.), a former minister and member of the Sejm Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation explaining the reasons for the disaster.

Inspectors from the Smolensk weather be referred "to the Indian." They reported the visibility of pilots so that they had when they went out before his hut and looked at a few points at the airport - says Mr Polaczek. - A forecast identified on the basis of data from the meteorological station, located 10 km far from the airport Siewiernyj - he adds.

This is confirmed by the pilots of the 26th Air Transport Regiment. - Siewiernyj no weather station. Data are from station to another airport, 10 miles away. In addition, the second airport is also closed for over a year - tell us pilots.

Now that the Russians admitted that the visibility wasn't as low as was told to the pilot, next will be the barometric pressure reading was in error, because the station is 10km away.

Them injuns (Russians) have a way of telling the weather when it is being reported 10 km away.

Wx will be taken out of this equation and the focus will be placed on ATC and the radar as it should be.

In time the truth will come out and those accountable for this outrage will be held to account.

“sarcasm mode off”.

Actually, if you want the local visibility, the best thing to do is step out side and look at landmarks at differing distances.

It’s and old true and tried system...:^)

The weather was fine. If you’re going to decapitate an entire government, you don’t take chances. My guess is that it was a bomb in the tail on final approach - 150mph, 100 ft. altitude, no survivors.

Something tells me the control tower was too busy to take observations.

They also didn’t have a certified obersver there.

But according to a report out of Bulgaria a while back, there was a report that the RVR on the runway was 500+ meters which given the fact that the Russians are now saying visibilty was 800 meters, the RVR reading is resonable.

But you are right on the tried and true method on known landmarks.
