In Aruba, Resentment over a Storm of US Media
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 6/8/10 | Todd Wilkinson

A U.S. media storm, generated primarily by cable news outlets Fox and CNN, has descended here, clouding the reputation of this former Dutch colony, many residents and longtime visitors say.

Media critics say that what's missing is perspective. Beyond appreciation for the time it takes for an investigation to proceed, particularly under the nuances of Dutch law, statistics confirm Aruba is far safer than almost all other Caribbean islands.

"Cable TV is treating this as the crime of the century, or at the least, the obsession of the moment," says Howard Kurtz, media critic for The Washington Post in an interview.

"There's undoubtedly been more coverage of Aruba over this disappearance than in the last two decades," says Mr. Kurtz.

"Television has become addicted to melodramas about missing white middle-class women. But even by Laci Peterson standards, the Holloway coverage is being way overdone."

Between recent comments made by Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, and television anchors who have portrayed investigators as the equivalent of bumbling Keystone Kops, many Arubans say they've had enough.

On Wednesday, a crowd of 200 staged a public protest in the capital city against Holloway Twitty's yet unproved criminal allegations against two suspects who have been released from custody.

I am sure the loved ones of those lost to the ‘nuances of Dutch law’ would appreciate delay in closure and justice.

There’s not much reason to discuss Aruba anymore. It’s history. Whatever should have happened there....will happen in Peru....and in the end...justice is done Peruvian-style.

Tough stuff, Aruba. You obviously have ties to international human trafficking which extends deeply into your justice system.

And here I thought they’d have the decency to feel embarrassed. I thought wrong.

It’s even safer when Joran is out of the country or in a Peruvian jail.

LOL @ Retired Greyhound!!!

I'm unsure why any American would want to travel in the crime infested, drug riddled Caribbean; surely America has some beautiful beach resorts available???

Yeah, well maybe if you had a court system that didn’t allow the parent of the suspect to get away with murder, you might have had so much unwelcome exposure.

Are you certain that this isn’t an old article from 2005 — I remember when there was a small ANTI-Beth demonstration in Aruba, this article seems very familiar.

A tourist destination that covers for local residents who murder American tourists deserves to lose the business of American tourists. Perhaps Aruba needs to try and cultivate the Cuban and Venezuelan tourist trade. The Europeans too, for that matter, if they have any money left after the Euro ceases to be a credible currency.

I spent some time on Grand Cayman Island and found it to be quite safe. In fact many Americans live and work there.

Hey Aruba-—you molly coddled that psychopath of yours and now he’s killed 2 young women that we know of. Is Aruba partly to blame? You betchya-—now deal with it and take a lesson from Peru how to process a criminal.
