GOP Leader Boehner: Taxpayers Should Pay For This BP Oil Mess

Talking Points Memo

By Brian Beutler:

Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry...and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner said he believes taxpayers should help pick up the tab for the clean up.

"I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning.

Boehner's statement followed comments last Friday by US Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue who said he opposes efforts to stick BP, a member of the Chamber, with the bill. "It is generally not the practice of this country to change the laws after the game," he said. "Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it. We are going to have to get the money from the government and from the companies and we will figure out a way to do that."

So today I asked Boehner, "Do you agree with Tom Donohue of the Chamber that the government and taxpayers should pitch in to clean up the oil spill?" The shorter answer is yes.

It's sort of moot.

One way or the other, taxpayers/energy-consumers will pay for it.

The GOP shouldn’t be on the leading edge of advocating the taxpayers pay for it. This is Stoopid.

Bite me Boehner. That’s equivalent of bailing out GM and Goldman Sachs. Let the shareholders take the brunt of the costs.

The administration and politicians of both parties should pay first at the federal and state and finally local levels.

You know... I like JB a lot. Of course, if the goverment is involved in fixing the problem the taxpayer is going to pay for it. He didn’t say we SHOULD pay for it.

This is a real snow job of a story and a very misleading headline.

Pay for it via spending cuts in other areas.

They don't call them the Stoopid Party for nothing.

Ultimately its us who pay... but if we look at risk / return calculations and valuations... this risk vests on their books.

Do we the public ever get any benefit of their wildcats? For the wealth that is being squandered and the damage done, the onus rests squarely on their heads.

Who is liable for the mess they left the whole gulf in? Is Mexico going to send a bill too?

Way to turn a phrase, Business Insider. No agenda there...

Obama said taxpayers should bail out wall street fatcats. Obama said taxpayers should pay to fund public employee pension plans via the porkulus bill. Obama said taxpayers should pay for illegal aliens' healthcare insurance.

Gee this is fun.

He is talking about Obama saying that BP should pay for the Moratorium on Drilling in the Gulf.

Obama wants BP to pay everyone for not being able to work because of his dictates.

This article is a hack job.

Boehner is a class A-One problem.
Like his counterpart in the House, Mitch McConnell, he should have been purged a long time ago.

Just more foot-in-mouth disease.

Of course, ULTIMATELY the public will pay anyway as any fines, costs, etc, will be passed along in higher costs by BP.
