Hispanics abandon Arizona, fleeing economy, immigration law
Christian Science Monitor - Yahoo ^ | 06/10/10 | Husna Haq

Arizona’s hard-hitting immigration law is driving Hispanics out of the state weeks before the controversial law goes into effect.

Although concrete figures are not available, anecdotal evidence suggests Hispanics, both legal residents and illegal immigrants, are starting to flee.

Schools in Hispanic neighborhoods are reporting abnormal enrollment drops, and businesses that serve Hispanics also report that business is down, according to a USA Today report published Wednesday.

The report suggests that the immigration law is compounding demographic trends that have already significantly curtailed illegal immigration during the past two years. The bad economy has been the primary deterrent to many Hispanic immigrants seeking to enter Arizona, says Jeffrey Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington.

“If you have a bad economy and a hostile environment, then that’s likely to cause people to think twice about coming, and possibly even to leave,” Mr. Passel says.

Arizona’s new immigration law requires that police conducting routine traffic stops or other checks ask people about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they're in the country illegally.

The law also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally or to disrupt traffic when hiring day laborers, regardless of a worker's immigration status. It would also become a crime for illegal immigrants to solicit work.

Critics contend the law could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. It could also force an exodus of scared immigrants – legal and illegal. Nearly 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after it passed a 2007 law that penalized businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

If we drive the illegals out who will keep the fertility rate of America at the minimal 2.1 children per family to keep us from losing population?

Illegals have to do the children creating American women aren’t willing to do! LOL!

Allow me to translate: I am making this all up, because no one knows what is happening and there is no way to measure this, statistically, at this time.

Why would legal, law-abiding residents leave? Makes no sense. This is just some foreign reporter's agenda.

If I was thinking of moving, I’d seriously think Arizona.

Come on over. Bring money.

IMO, Arizona, as a result of departing illegals and others, will find reduced costs in education, welfare, public housing, prisons, law enforcement, and more. Illegals drain the state budgets. These are facts that for some reason, governments, at all levels refuse to recognize.

And to all of the “intelligentsia” who want to see America’s population reduced by 25 million immediately (and are having back room deals to reduce medical to the elderly, SSAN, pensions, etc.), accomplish this in one fell swoop by deporting ALL illegals first!

Oklahoma passed some tougher immigration laws a couple of years ago and we heard similar stories from that state. Haven’t heard a lot recently, but I think their law did decrease the number of illegals.

It never created the sort of uproar this Arizona law has caused. Don’t know if it was significantly different, or if the presence of Obama and his gang has simply been the catalyst for the protest against the Arizona law.

Anyone know how things have gone in Oklahoma in the past year or so?

"I love it when a plan comes together." John "Hannibol" Smith

Reduced crime, reduced social welfare cost, decreased deflationary wage pressure and improved job prospects for Americans seeking entry level jobs.

Even Mexicans win, reduced exposure to organized crime and increased pressure on the Mexican Government to reform.

Amazing what happens when you just enforce laws.
