Hispanics in the US: A new generation

Meet Generation 1.5

They were brought to the US at a young age by the parents, first generation immigrants who often still have close ties to their home countries.

Campaigners want the legal limbo of young immigrants resolved

Younger brothers and sisters were born in America, second generation immigrants who enjoy the status of US citizens.

Not Generation 1.5. Despite having lived most of their lives in the US and speaking fluent English, many cannot legally work, vote or drive in most US states. They are subject to arrest and deportation just like any other undocumented migrant.

"They fear being deported but many of them don't know (anything) other than English, so they have no idea what awaits (them) in their countries of origin, said Ruben Rumbaut of the University of California in Irvine, who coined the Generation 1.5 term.

There are no official figures of how many undocumented children live in the US, but the Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 7% of all Hispanic children are unauthorised immigrants.

This suggest there are 1.1 million Latino children who are not US citizens. Children can attend primary and secondary school without being asked about their immigration status, but getting through higher education can be more difficult.

It is estimated that approximately 65,000 undocumented students - both Hispanic and non-Hispanic - graduate each year from high school.

In all but 11 states,

And, the cost to send them to school, that alone is over $8bil/yr assuming the 1.1million number is correct.

When you consider the children born here of illegal mothers, that number is EASILY $100bil/yr...for schooling alone...EVERY YEAR.

That doesn't include social costs, welfare, food stamps, medical programs, jails etc.

If illegals and their US born children)are costing the US taxpayer less than $500bil/yr, I'd be astounded.

Nobody like to talk about the cost of the US born children, as if they are real citizens deserving of every benefit.

We have a sever need for an Amendment altering the language of the 14th.

The DREAM Act is ridiculous. It provides tax dollars for student loans to help them go to college then puts them on a path to citizenship if they finish. As if any college degree these days is some kind of great achievement.

The one part of the Act I am open to is providing a citizenship option for those who join the military. If these kids seriously prefer this country to their country of origin, let them serve for three or more years in the military. I dont know if that is currently an option for illegals to become legal, but if it isnt maybe it should be.

The latino lefties are going to have to deal with the new generation of latino conservatives who think this "brown is beautiful" racial division crap is an excuse to get the snot knocked out of them.

They'll never know that the tall moreno behind them was raised right wing conservative until it's too late. It may occur to them on the way to the intensive care unit however...

I am not sure where this author got this information.

I work in a 95% Hispanic high school in CA. With a few exceptions, the generation born here to illegal parents are not fluent in English. They have no allegiance to the US and routinely route for “their” country against the US in any sport. Despite growing up here, they cannot tell you who Thomas Jefferson is. They don’t know what Memorial Day is about. They don’t buy in to American customs or beliefs. They have no interest in learning about America. They can’t spell or write an essay. Most of them have no frame of reference to build upon because their families did not take them to zoos, museums, plays and other cultural events.

In addition, we give them free emergency medical care. Free breakfast and lunch every school day. Free pre-natal care if they become pregnant in high school. Free day care for their babies so they can continue high school. Despite all this help, most of them couldn’t care less about their grades. They throw most of that free food away. They all have fancy iPods and cel phones but come to school without a pencil or paper. They don’t do homework. Now they are up in arms because they want us to give them a college education too! They have no respect for our laws. The very foundation of their lives is built on flouting our laws! They have no interest in America other than what they can get out of it.

Be afraid, America. These are the people who will be voting in 2 years.

We should be afraid of a invading army!! Our nation was built on the concept of ASSIMILATION OF DIVERSE CULTURES , there is no assimilation with the Mexicans ,send them home!!

Why are they afraid to say/write “Mexican”? It’s really ignorant (and not untypical of liberals) to lump every tan skinned Spanish speaking person into one big hopper like Hispanic or Latino for political purposes.

Because of the sheer numbers, there is very little assimilation going on.

They celebrate their “own” holidays. They don’t want to assimilate. Most of these teens have never carved a Halloween pumpkin, attended a baseball game, gone to the zoo or a museum, or watched much of our television shows.

It is an alternate reality with its own music, tv, radio, sports, and culture.

And they like it that way.

The two battles the US is facing are against Islam and Mexican culture...both are trying to crush American culture...

WE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME LAWS PERTAINING TO OUR BORDERS AS THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT HAS PERTAINING TO THEIR BORDERS AND OUR BORDER PROBLEMS WOULD BE SOLVED !
