Boldly going nowhere: Nasa ends plan to put man back on Moon
Times Online ^ | June 14th 2010 | Jacqui Goddard,

Nasa has begun to wind down construction of the rockets and spacecraft that were to have taken astronauts back to the Moon — effectively dismantling the US human spaceflight programme despite a congressional ban on its doing so.

Legislators have accused President Obama’s Administration of contriving to slip the termination of the Constellation programme through the back door to avoid a battle on Capitol Hill.

Constellation aimed to build upon what was arguably America’s greatest technological achievement, the first lunar landing of 1969, by launching new expeditions to the Moon and to Mars and worlds beyond. Mr Obama proposed in February that it should be scrapped because it was “over budget, behind schedule and lacking in innovation”, but he has met opposition in Congress, which has yet to approve his plan. The head of Nasa, Major-General Charlie Bolden — an Obama appointee — has now written to aerospace contractors telling them to cut back immediately on Constellation-related projects costing almost $1 billion (£690 million), to comply with regulations requiring them to budget for possible contract termination costs.

More Hope and Change from Obama.

Before Obama was elected President we were the leader in space exploration and heading back to the moon and then on to Mars. Now with the last Shuttle flight soon to come the Shuttle fleet will be retired and we then won't even have a craft available to get us into low earth orbit Let alone travel back to the Space Station that billions of dollars of tax payer money went into building.

Someone cue the Guinness Beer Commercial Guys:

How's that Hope-N-Change® working out for everybody?

We will know when Obama truly reaches out to his base, when he proposes a wind farm to be installed on the moon for electricity. It’s green, it will make jobs, it is terribly, horribly expensive ... and there’s no air on the moon. But, don’t let a little detail like that get in the way of your ideology, or placating your base.

“Nasa ends...”

or

“Obama ends...”

It wasn’t Nasa’s idea. He really seems determined to destroy everything exceptional about America.

Step by step.

You were saying ...

That whole space program-thing made Americans think they were superior and stuff. We can’t have that.

I've seen a good number of FReepers say that it's a waste of our taxpayer money to think about sending any manned missions to either the moon or to Mars. Those posters are adamantly against it as a waste of US Taxpayer money -- and especially so now.

So, in that light, they would be glad to hear that Obama was killing manned space flight to the moon and to Mars.

Not all FReepers are going to be on the same track as your thinking on the matter.

As for me, I always liked the manned space program, but it has definitely been deteriorating for quite a while, long before Obama got into office. And even with previous administrations many here on Free Republic who have long complained about the money spent at NASA, as a "boondoggle" and entirely wasteful.

Zero is the “science president”!

Republicans are anti-science. That’s what the libs keep telling us.

Those outer space mavens on the Coast-to-Coast AM radio show couldn’t wait for Zero to get into office. Hope they’re enjoying their meal of crow. I bet it goes well with Tang.

There's been a number of FReepers who have wanted to "sack NASA" because they've considered it a boondoggle and a total waste of US Taxpayer money. You're not going to have all the FReepers on your side, on behalf of NASA and any manned space flights to Mars and/or the Moon.

But, like I said in another post, I've always liked the manned space program, but it's simply not something that all FReepers seem to think is worthwhile and should continue.

I've seen a number of FReepers who are anti-NASA and think it's a waste of US Taxpayer money and want to see it scrapped and/or scaled back drastically, and especially so with the manned space program, when you talk about either the Moon or Mars.

Those same folks surely don’t think he is going to use it to build up the military.
This is yet another sign that he hopes to make the USA into the usa.

I've seen the debates here, back and forth, about manned space flight. And it's undeniable, NASA has wasted tons of money - name a gov't program that hasn't. Still, Obama wants to kill it because it's a symbol of American exceptionalism. Period.
