Broke Dad Put Abby Up for Sail
Fox News ^ | June 14, 2010

Posted on 06/14/2010 9:50:22 AM PDT by Ron C.

Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

At 16 years old, she’s probably completed her high school education. And I’m pretty confident that she can read, and confident that she did a lot of reading on the boat. She’s more “educated” than most 16-year-olds.

All tsunamis are different

True, but the physics of water is the same.

Now, what is 100 times more likely than a Tsunami striking the sailboat is a ROGUE WAVE.

Do you know her? Are you a relative? How do you know she was reading on the boat?

And how do we know this? You are assuming a lot with your post.

“This girl is sailing solo on open ocean waters and she probably doesn’t even know how to put a condom on a cucumber.”

EXACTLY - how dare they break the mold!

If you are a relative can you get me a discount on her apparel line at Abby16.com?

People are insulting this young woman because she is 16, and had taken command of a sailing vessel. Do they also ridicule U.S. Navy Admiral David Farragut for having taken command of a sailing vessel — a captured British whaling ship — at 12 years old?

Teens can do amazing things. Let’s not demean those who seek to achieve such feats.

Those are separate issues. Should Abby be allowed to attempt to sail around the world alone? I say yes.

And if she does, how should she pay for it? And if she needs a rescue, who should pay for that?

They found sponsors for the trip. As far as the rescue goes, her sponsors and her family should bear the full financial burden of the adventure.

But forbid her from sailing around the world? That’s not my business because it’s not my life.

“The first man to become Admiral in the U.S. Navy captained his first ship at age 12.

I can’t believe FReepers have such low expectations from teens.”

We FReepers are ‘embracing diversity’ by discussing why the government should NOT be allowed to intrude into family decisions.

After all “diversity is our strength’. And, sometimes our amusement.

Exactly.

And man, another kid! How selfish! He should have killed her off. That’s the ‘responsible’ decision.

Naps - I see you went to Catholic Schools, many would (have) say that is child abuse.

The issue is, who decides? Parents or complete strangers?

“Did the cat, or it’s parents have to pay for the rescue?”

That’s a good question. Why did they bother wasting our hard earned money. They should have left the cat to die.

Which makes it all the more foolish for the parents to let her sail solo through the Indian Ocean during the winter.

Fools they may be.

However, FREEDOM is the right to make decisions for yourself and your family.

This 16 year old wanted to achieve a goal, and risked her life. She had her parents solidly supporting and encouraging her.

Many say she was wrong.

Yet we allow 16 year old girls to risk their lives having an abortion. Our government pays for them to take that risk, and makes it possible by law.

Everybody is so darn concerned that one WELL PREPARED 16 year old girl went on a record breaking (whether there be any official award or not) attempt and risked her life, while they remain silent about 16 million young girls letting some mafia-hired doctor jam pitchforks up inside their womb.

This was discussed in detail on another FR thread.

The boat builder is just covering himself, look on that statement as lawyer repellent.

That boat is a good example of what cubic cash and the best sailing and engineering minds can create.

It is questionable if Paul Bunyan could have saved that mast from that wave. Fortunately, the hull performed as planned.

Minus that wave, we would be occupying our minds with Obama’s schemes and stupidities. Obama caused that wave to distract us! ! !

I want to address your comment again, because I didn't address an important point you were making.

I think the parents were foolish for pushing her to 'go ahead' via the worst route, at the worst time, considering she would no longer be able to beat any 'official' record. The only record she would have broken would have been a 'personal' one between her and her brother.

Her accomplishment would have been all the greater had she made it all the way, considering the extreme danger of the route.

BUT, it was not my decision to make. It was theirs. Right or wrong.

That is part of the debate. GOOD preparation wouldn't have put her in the Indian Ocean in winter. See post 135.

girl went on a record breaking (whether there be any official award or not) attempt and risked her life,

That's also part of the debate. A child risking their life to set a meaningless record that a YOUNGER child will try to break.

while they remain silent about 16 million young girls letting some mafia-hired doctor jam pitchforks up inside their womb.

Abortion is not ignored on FR and has nothing to do with taking meaningless risks at a young age.
