Here's a dose of reality.
The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

So she and her parents decision to go ahead was correct.
Boy isn't THAT a matter of opinion! :-)
The “storm” didn’t dismast her, a wave did.
As for “belonging”, the sea is a hostile environment. No man belongs there. All we can do is prepare and then trust in our good efforts and luck to avoid the totally unpredictable events - like a huge wave.
Worst of all is the stranded polar bears on the runaway icebergs.
That's because there are those who are not interested in facts, but only in WINNING the ARGUMENT. After all, they know better than everybody else. Just ask them.
Where did you learn to parse like that?
Emergency Rescue Effort is Launched for Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland (16 years Old and Alone)
endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly abated.
TRUE.
However, she had a right to try.
Post 200 raises an interesting issue, the arming of a ship/crew while at sea.
Most nations do not support this, have very restrictive laws against on board weapons, etc.
America is unique in its 2nd Amendment. Pirates can’t be fought off effectively thanks to legal impediments to carrying appropriate weapons on yachts.
However, rapes and general sexual bad situations occur frequently, even in soi dissant good neighborhoods.
I’d defer to the parents and the sailor’s decision.
Yes, lots of people are ridiculing her. Read the threads.
She’s been called “buffoon girl” and “the baboon girl” and “Octomom on the high seas.” She’s been ridiculed for being homeschooled. Someone wrote, “Im sure well all be reading about her journey in Playboy soon enough.” Someone else complained that “this brat wasn’t trying to discover anything, other than fame.”
Even DJ MacWoW, who says he’s not saying anything negative about her, wrote, “Abby was being self-serving.”
I don’t know what age is “too young” to try to accomplish something dramatic. I suppose it’s up to the parents and their son or daughter.
For a 16-year-old, Abby has performed admirably, and seems mature beyond her years.
I'm not too sure my Mom was as happy about me doing so, as my Dad, but it was probably for the same reason you have.
I don;t attack her.
“Abby has performed admirably, and seems mature beyond her years”. . .we disagree.
“Worst of all is the stranded polar bears on the runaway icebergs.”
When you think about - adult polar bears are guily of animal abuse.
Just to make your day complete...
Jessica Watson’s voyage didn’t meet the definition of nautical circumnavigation. So the ‘unofficial’ record is still for a 17 y/o. Joy.
“Most homeschoolers are beyond highschool at 16 years old. Many are in college with dual enrollment; some as full-time college students.”
As a matter of fact, both my mother and my sister were in college at age 15. Both were public schooled, both rose to the top of their fields.
I’d suggest to my fellow FReepers that if you have not had experience with people with that level of ability while still mid teens, it is understandable that you would consider them “children”.
However, you would consider wrongly.
But, until you have dealt with such people, it is difficult to accept their capabilities. They certainly don’t look different, they just have different capabilities from the norm.
She was able to get the water out of the engine and get it restarted.
It would have been a personal record that served no purpose other than give Abby the right to say "I DID IT!". That's self-serving. Record setters do these things for no other reason than personal satisfaction. Who else does such an act serve? That's not negative. It is a fact.
Oh geeze. I hadn't seen this before. Is this something new? It just happened?
Using a SAT phone. Isn't technology great?
So, it really wasn't as dangerous as they are making it out to be. If she was that safe, then why not risk the attempt?
Besides, you say it was only the 'reality tv show' which prompted her to do this.
Here are HER OWN WORDS.
"It has been my dream since I was 13 years old and began single-handing, to one day sail solo around the world. I am 16 years old and this blog will contain the story of my attempt to become the world's youngest solo circumnavigator. "
You are correct. In Abby's case the parents risked her life, but she was completely safe because the boat was unsinkable.
In the case of abortion, at least one of the two humans involved, dies.
