Broke Dad Put Abby Up for Sail
Fox News ^ | June 14, 2010

Posted on 06/14/2010 9:50:22 AM PDT by Ron C.

Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

I would, it would be awesome. Plus it’s a heckuva challenge.

I don't have a TV. Not for years.

That would explain your relatively high level of intelligence and debating skills.

You think reality shows are a good thing?

Nope. Don't watch them. Don't watch TV either. Haven't for years, except to watch a selected movie with my son. However, I hear that other people do, enough to pay the people on them pretty darn good.

Then why would you say "So why shouldn’t her parents partake in the same venue to attempt to financially provide for themselves?"

Because it's their business, not mine. I don't have to participate , but I think they have the freedom to do so.

We can judge others actions.

You were judging their motives, which you only marginally know anything about. We probably have about the same 'info' on this digested. Neither of us was there, so we only have what we read to depend on. You know how that goes.

says it will drift and possibly wash up somewhere.

Maybe. I doubt it though. There is plenty of value , at least to Abby and her family, if not the designer. Someone will make the effort soon to recover it, IMHO.

I asked if Freepers criticize liberals because of envy or because they disagree.

Could be both.

And you are prone to paring them to say something else.

Just separating the wheat from the chaff.

Do the Sunderland's actions reflect a mindset worthy of conservative support?

Only if you believe that 'conservative' means that people should be allowed to make decisions for themselves and their children in pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness, instead of a nanny state telling them NO.

On the other hand, their actions ended up causing expense to others, which is something I believe conservatives avoid.

So, I guess you have to decide for yourself.

I wouldn't market my kid.

You wouldn't. I wouldn't. I don't think anyone else here would.

However, our society 'accepts' the marketing of children rather easily.

Just ask Michael Jackson's parents.

Or the parents who put their children on STAR SEARCH (I know, it kinda dates me. I would have used the latest kid star show if I had any clue what they are now called).

That was dysfunctional!

And yet, many, many years later, we still don't know for sure what even happened.

But everyone KNOWS exactly what went on with ABBY and her family.

I sincerely appreciate your comments and the back and forth on this situation. I learned some new things about Abby’s trip during the thread.

To me, that is WINNING. I hope you WON too.

The WSSRC now longer records oldest and youngest records. You can read about it in a little more detail here:

http://www.sail-world.com/CruisingAus/Jessica-Watson:—Keeping-the-Record-Straight/69108

It also explains why Jessica Watson did not do a “Round the World”. She missed a key point in her travels.

Further, this article:

http://www.sailangle.com/news/details/id/3312

States that WSSRC now longer allows less than 18 y/o participants in recordholding.

No record, no sponsors, no boat.

Oh I see. The minor child should risk her life for her parents because they have no other means of earning an income to provide for their children.

One that I am not qualified to answer as I am completely sure I do not know all the facts.

The only fact pertinent to this thread is that they were willing to risk the life of their underage child for fame and money.

Now, the Titanic, it sunk.

The owners, Cunard, claimed the ship was unsinkable.

But, the designer of 'WILD EYES' probably thought his high-tech mast made of the latest carbon-fiber technology was unbreakable.

The designer can make any ludicrous claim he wants but given the fact a ship the size of the Titanic can break apart then a 40 vessel can certainly do the same.

Right. Let your kid sail around the world, or chain them to the tv. Those are our only choices.

She didn't sail around the world, she almost died. That looked like a small boat to me. I know people who do sail around the world and it takes at least 2 strong and knowledgeable people to do it in a much larger craft.

I don’t think any but if nothing else, maybe people who participate in risky adventures should be required to carry rescue-insurance.
