Etheridge apologizes for confrontation caught on video

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) on Monday apologized for behaving aggressively during a confrontation on the street with a young man who claimed to be a student.

"I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved," he said in a statement released by his office.

A video of the incident, in which Etheridge can be seen swatting at a camera and grabbing the young man by the coat collar, appeared online Monday morning.

"Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina," Etheridge said, "I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse."

I hope he does, too. It will look real good on his resume this fall.

He grabbed the kid by the arm and wouldn’t let him go. THen he grabbed his neck - not his collar.

If I were that kid’s parent, there would be some serious legal steps being taken.

Yes, he’s sorry all right.

Time to remind him who he works for.

I just called his office to leave my thoughts. A real live person answered:

is this yutz in a competitive district by any chance?

After a little research, it seems that, from March 4, 1901 (yep, over one century ago) until the present, the North Carolina 2nd Congressional District has had a Republican Congressman only from January 3, 1995 through January 3, 1997.

So, I would predict that Etheridge could have been filmed helping Joran van der Sloot beat Stephanie Flores to death and his District would still re-elect him.

He has brought dishonor on the house, the republicans should be calling for an impeachment hearing.

No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become...

Not too sincere when he has to add that.

I love this guy. Who are you? Who are you? Dammit, where’s my highball? What the hell? Where am I? Come here sonny, you little..lol. That guy’s a riot. I want to meet him.

LOL! I've been lmao too. The guy's a total mess, but hillarious in his own drunken-uncle sort of way.

You gotta love the part near the end where he jerks the kid to him, then puts his arm around him and gives him a sort of man-hug.

The poor kid must have been like "wtf?"

Pretty sincere apology. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Actually I can ask for a lot more than that. Assault, battery and theft (you did notice he took the kids cell phone) usually call for more than an apology, no mater how sincere. And that one wan't particularly sincere as he tried to justify his actions by claiming it was intrusive.

Put it this way, if i grab some woman, take her purse and then get caught, can I just say I'm sorry and get away with it? If not then neither can this congress critter.

“No matter how partisan this little p.o.s. was, I still shouldn’t have done this on camera.” That’s what he meant.

I wish just once I’d see someone knock the snot out of one of these “royal” representatives. Once the congressman grabbed his neck he would have been within his rights to kick the bastard in the cods.

"...At least this one has the sense to apologize without using some weasel phrase like “if anyone was offended..."

Well, sorta. While not technically "weasel words" per-se, "Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina" sounds awfully self-serving to me.

Somewhat like "You dumbass voters need to forget about me assaulting those hooligans, and just concentrate on how long I've been slopping all that good old gummint gravy back down there to ya'all at home in North Carolina...."

That's the old "Well, Mussolini did make the trains run on time, you know" defense.

Good point. The congress folks can demand to know who’s asking them questions but an Arizona cop can’t ask a possible illegal alien where he’s from.

"I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved," he said in a statement released by his office.

To all involved? I live in North Carolina's 2nd Congressional District and I wasn't involved, but I feel like he owes me and my fellow constituents an apology for causing us all embarrassment for his actions. He's only sorry that he was filmed during his assault and battering of the student who asked him if he fully supported Obama's agenda. I wonder what he would have done if the kid asked him if he voted for Nancy Pelosi to be the Speaker of the House?

I wish some republican congressman would get his nephew to help him with a scam and watch the media go nuts. Then they could both do a press conference and say “Ha! Got cha’!”
