Etheridge apologizes for confrontation caught on video

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) on Monday apologized for behaving aggressively during a confrontation on the street with a young man who claimed to be a student.

"I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved," he said in a statement released by his office.

A video of the incident, in which Etheridge can be seen swatting at a camera and grabbing the young man by the coat collar, appeared online Monday morning.

"Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina," Etheridge said, "I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse."

A few days ago, Alan Grayson said that anyone who said “Dril Baby Drill” in ‘08 “should be put in jail with Michael Steele.” I called Grayson’s office and asked his phone jockey if the guy coming to my house to arrest me would be wearing a brown shirt or one of those sharp-looking SS uniforms with the lightning bolts and skulls. He stammered out that he had no idea how to comment on such a thing.

“Pretty sincere apology. Can’t ask for much more than that.”
Thank you for the post Mrs. Eitheridge.

The NCGOP needs to make a billboard with Bob “Hands of Death” Etheridge’s hands on the boy’s throat and ask if he has choked off jobs by voting with Obama.

it's really the "tea party's" fault. Did anyone notice the release of all the death threats against Teddy K? The case against conservatives, painting us as terrorists continues to be made by the government. We well may have seen our last free election. Sad that 53% of us voted for "fundamental transformation". You cat say O didn't warn us.

I still can’t believe that kid let that bully grab him and hold him. I may be old, but we would have both been on the ground.

The question posed was viewpoint neutral.

You make an important point. For all he knew these kids were libs.

Clean cut kids in suits or not, I think it's actually far more likely that he was thinking "How dare you" rather than getting hateful because he thought they were "the enemy." Reminds me of a certain king played by Mel Brooks...

Calling the questioning “partisan [and] intrusive” is exactly the sort of weasel worded non-apology that these pols specialize in.

According the the so-called apology, Ethridge was the victim.

I predict the Congressman will make an announcement that he is checking into rehab - the all-purpose liberal refuge for when they are caught behaving badly and can make a play for sympathy.

“Pretty sincere apology. Can’t ask for much more than that.”

How about this?

“I was sh*tfaced drunk and did not know what I was doing. I am sorry I assaulted this young man. I have a problem with alcohol and am checking into re-hab immediately.”

The leftists just loved these kind of ambush interviews on Republicans when it was Michael Moore doing it. LOVED IT! Now they’re kinda like well, it wasn’t right what he did, but the kid did.. blah blah

And moore asked far more personal questions than this. This was a political question. Imagine if this democrat had been asked if he’d send his kid to the front lines?

“Etheridge met the legal definition of simple assault. That happens to be a crime.”

It sure enough does. A crime was committed by a sitting House member and “caught” on video.

“Assault” is defined generally as the threat or use of force on another person that causes that person to have reasonable apprehension of imminent harmful or offensive contact. Assault can be a civil wrong (or “tort”). It can also be a crime.

There are two forms of misdemeanor assault (that is, simple assault) in Washington, D.C. First, there is “attempted battery assault” which occurs when the defendant injures or attempts to injure another person. The second form, “intent-to-frighten” assault, is defined as a threatening act that puts another person in reasonable fear of immediate injury.

In both cases, the prosecution must also demonstrate that the defendant’s act was voluntary and that the defendant had the actual ability to injure the other person at the time of the incident. “Injury” is defined as any physical injury, however slight, and includes an “offensive touching.” The penalty for either form of this type of assault is $1,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 180 days.

I’ve had to apologize for lots of things I’ve said and done after sobering up, too. But I still had to own them.
