By all rights Israel should of been wiped out during the Yom Kippur war. They were vastly outnumbered. On the Golan Heights, approximately 180 Israeli tanks faced an onslaught of 1,400 Syrian tanks. Along the Suez Canal, 436 Israeli defenders were attacked by 80,000 Egyptians. When God is on your side amazing things can happen.

I don't underestimate the power of God, but good training, superior equipment, the largest military airlift in history , and an enemy who's idea of tactics is running their tanks straight at you can help too.

The difference now is that in 1973 Israel knew that it could only get so bad. They knew that they could take the Syrians and Egyptians so long as they had enough ammo and as long as nobody else joined in. The US flew a non stop string of C-5s and C-141s full of ammunition, spare parts and replacement aircraft and helicopters. The US also threatened to launch a nuclear strike on the USSR if they intervened. We went all the way to DEFCON 2 and had the bombers in the air before the Russians backed down. It was the confidence that someone was backing their action that keep the war conventional, despite Israel having a supply of nukes that could have obliterated Egypt's army in the Sinai.

Today Israel stands completely alone. So the better comparison for what is going on today is May 1967 not September 1973. When you know someone is watching your back you can wait for the other guy to make the first move. It also lets you fight by Marquess of Queensberry rules. When you are surrounded, outnumbered, alone and your enemy seeks only your total destruction, your only option is to lash out and hope to destroy your enemy in detail before he brings his full overwhelming strength against you. Obama's failed attempts at peace by appeasing the Arabs is only going to lead to a violent, uncontrollable and total war of annihilation.

Former Weather Underground leaders William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, as well as Code Pink founder Jodie Evans, helped organize the Free Gaza Movement, which launched the six-ship flotilla from Turkey to Israel that ended in a violent clash with Israeli Defense Forces, BigGovernment.com reported.

In January, the trio were spotted in Egypt attempting to stir up crowds on the streets with 1,400 other left-wing activists after the Egyptian government refused to allow Free Gaza Movement members to enter the Gaza Strip. About 100 marchers were eventually allowed to cross the border, where they were met by former Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh.

BigGovernment quotes author Philip Weiss, who wrote that he witnessed Ayers and Dohrn arguing with fellow activists over whether to accept Egypt’s offer to allow a small number of them into Gaza:

“Dohrn said that the principle of ‘All or none’ was a miserable one for activist politics. You always took what you could get and kept fighting for more. A European man in a red keffiyeh screamed at her that she was serving the fascisti. Her partner Bill Ayers gently confronted him and asked him why he was so out of control. Between getting on and off the bus, Dohrn, who wore a flower in her hair, said that she didn’t like the absolutist certainty of the people on the other side of the police barricades, and having been in the Weather Underground, she knew something about absolutist feeling.”

As political theater, an argument between the aging flower child/domestic terrorist and a fellow traveler over who knew more about “absolutist feelings” would be hard to top.
