U.S. Recognizes Long Island Tribe (Shinnecock casino on its way)
NY Times ^ | 06/15/2010 | DANNY HAKIM

ALBANY — The Obama administration approved the Shinnecock Indians on Long Island for federal recognition on Tuesday, culminating a court battle lasting three decades and paving the way for the tribe to build a casino in New York City or its suburbs.

While there is still a 30-day comment period before the matter is fully settled, the support of the administration all but assures the 1,292-member tribe’s recognition. The announcement, made by the Bureau of Indian Affairs on Tuesday morning, will almost certainly change the way of life for the relatively impoverished tribe, whose members live on 800 acres in Southampton, N.Y., in the midst of some of the nation’s wealthiest and most famous celebrities.

More property dropped from the tax roles.

The Shinnecock Tribe has been around for ever. I remember going to the Pow Wows as a teenager, and that was decades ago.

God bless 'em!

"When does the Fukawi tribe get a casino?"

I'm not sure about the casino, but I believe they've recently acquired a big white home, a fleet of helicopters, their own plane and an endless supply of boob-belts.

There is a group of Cherokees who bought five acres near HOT SPRINGS AR and have been trying to get it recognized as a “reservation”. They want to build a casino there.

For what it is worth, back in the 1950s and early 1960s, HOT SPRINGS AR was the illegal gambling mecca of the US.

Another group is trying to get a casino at the family resort BRANSON, MO.

I live on Long Island in Suffolk county, about a half hour west of where they want have said they want to build this casino. It would take a LOT of road construction to get near that area. There is an apple picking festival near that area every year. The traffic for that backs up for an hour or more. I can’t even imagine what it’d be if there was a casino there.

Did the Shinnecock plan include building up the roads to handle the increased traffic?

Branson was one.
Lake of the Ozarks was another.

Both went nowhere.

The article is exceptionally sparse, but from what I've read in previous articles, I don't believe so. So far, the fight has been solely about getting recognized - recognition that automatically comes with some inherent ability to build a specific kind of casino on their own land. The mention of Manhattan or NYC suburbs is news to me.

This tribe is also battling it out with owners of some PRIME real estate in the Hamptons over ownership, including Shinnecock Hills. The total value of these contested properties is well over $1 billion. Where this casino ends up, and what kind of casino it will be has yet to be litigated or negotiated in any way.

Here's the best part - after Obama gets through destroying the economy, there's a reasonable chance that wampum will regain its intrinsic value. They might actually get to buy Manhattan back with shells and shiny things.

Whatever they sell to whom ever, it still brings up the issue of the Constitutionality of government giving an advantage to a special group based on race.

Dat Wasist!

Inside Story:

The Shinnecock Tribe has been very, shall we adulterated, in the past 150 years since the Civil War.

The typical Shinnecock is now about 10 to 12 percent “Native American,” about 4 to 5 percent Caucasian, about 4 to 6 percent Hispanic and about 80 percent African American.

The so-called Shinnecock Nation is purely a welfare-seeking group trying to hide their reparations, handout, no taxes on cigaretts and special privileges seeking agenda under a banner of “Native American Pride”

When you go onto their reservation, it's Detroit and/or Bubbaworld East.

Typical example (different tribe): http://unkechaug.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/indians091012_2_5601.jpg
