I just read this...One of the incidents involved an armed FedEx driver who went to the wrong gate on the base for deliveries. Officials believe there was no threatening intent on his part. He simply went to wrong gate and was armed with a weapon.

This is NJ & when does a FedEx guy carry a gun? It is hard to get a carry permit here. I don't buy this story. Nor the other one about a homeless man in the woods shooting of guns. I know Jackson/Lakehurst & guns going off in the woods isn't uncommon during weekends. I think we aren't supposed to know what happened.

I used to have weekend property in the area.

We had dirt bikes.

We used to be able to take our dirt bikes onto the Dix military reservation, at a point immediately southeast of McGuire's main airstrip, entering without any checkpoints from a public road, and then ride the terrain, on the Dix reservation, for miles east of there, nearly all the way to Lakehurst. The only warnings we got at that time were warning signs in and around an artillery practice zone. The main "occupied" area of Ft. Dix, itself, was a pretty open base with four public county roads passing through it - without checkpoints; two traversing the post going north and south and two going east and west.

Have not been through the area in years, since before 9-11, so I don't know what the access conditions there are today.

...heard this AM it was a “open gate” discovered that prompted the alert.

That’s Hangar One NAS Lakehurst, NJ, the site of my first US Navy “A” School(ABH) in 1980!
