Many voters in the eastern Nebraska city of Fremont supported a ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants, according to preliminary results from Monday's special election.
With votes from seven of 20 precincts counted, 58 percent of residents were supporting the measure the latest proposal in a series of immigration regulations taken up by communities around the country. Full results were not expected until later Monday night.
The town has watched as its Hispanic population surged in the past two decades, largely due to the jobs available at the nearby Fremont Beef and Hormel meatpacking plants. The city also has an enviably low unemployment rate that matches the Nebraska rate of 4.9 percent.
Supporters say the measure is needed to make up for what they see as lax federal law enforcement. Opponents say it could fuel discrimination. If the ordinance is approved, the community of 25,000 people could also face a long and costly court battle because the American Civil Liberties Union has promised to file a lawsuit.

Several Senators have learned of a possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation’s 11-18 million illegal aliens. Led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can’t secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate.
The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if 60 votes can’t be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.

SWEET! Gonna have to do more business at Arms and Ammo in Fremont!
PASSED per Greta on Fox News!
Greta just announced that the measure has PASSED!!
Congratulations, Fremont. May Virginia be next.
Congratulations!!! I read that this proposition was put forth by the same gentleman that crafter our (AZ) law.
crafted
It should help eliminate discrimination, because in the future when one sees a Hispanic at the market they can be reasonably confident that the Hispanic is here legally and a economic contributor to society and not an illegal economic and social destroyer.
There will be a Civil War if Obama pushes amnesty. If Obama gives amnesty to 30 million illegals, then 50 million relatives will soon follow and then it's all over for our Sacred 5000 Year Miracle called the United States!
passed.
Yes it was! Heard an interview with him on local radio! Good man!
May ALL of America be next!
Husker Power!
Translation: "These racists are only objecting to skin color."
Good deal!
I’m from near there and know Nebraskans well. Broadly speaking they are traditionalists, but fair-minded, and NOT racists. Not far from Fremont you’ll find small tows with strong ethnic heritage - German, Polish, and Czech - in fact a hilly region is referred to as the “Bohemian Alps of Nebraska”. These folks are descended from immigrants and homesteaders and they celebrate their heritage while taking pride in being Americans. I’m certain those who voted YES today want nothing more or less. Follow the rules and come here legally and they will welcome Hispanic or any other immigrants with open arms as friends and neighbors.
But if a person is here illegally...well, what part of “illegal” is difficult to understand?
Amen and amen!
Thank God it passed! I hope this is only the beginning...
Next is to get rid of Ben Nelson!
Without a congressional vote? They better not. They can't legally do that, can they? Of course this group doesn't care about legality or the Constitution, why would I be surprised. But this outrages me.
Amen!
Yippee!!! Now Fremont Nebraska joins Arizona as the testicular core of the nation. Can you imagine the grief they’re going to get??
