Iran On War Alert Over "US And Israeli Concentrations" In Azerbaijan
DEBKA ^ | June 23, 2010

Posted on 06/23/2010 5:55:59 AM PDT by Fennie

In a rare move, Iran has declared a state of war on its northwestern border, DEBKAfile's military and Iranian sources report. Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps men and equipment units are being massed in the Caspian Sea region against what Tehran claims are US and Israeli forces concentrated on army and air bases in Azerbaijan ready to strike Iran's nuclear facilities.

The announcement came on Tuesday, June 22 from Brig.-Gen Mehdi Moini of the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), commander of the forces tasked with "repelling" this American-Israeli offensive. He said: "The mobilization is due to the presence of American and Israeli forces on the western border," adding, "Reinforcements are being dispatched to West Azerbaijan Province because some western countries are fueling ethnic conflicts to destabilize the situation in the region."

In the past, Iranian officials have spoken of US and Israel attacks in general terms. DEBKAfile's Iranian sources note that this is the first time that a specific location was mentioned and large reinforcements dispatched to give the threat substance. Other Iranian sources report that in the last few days, Israel has secretly transferred a large number of bomber jets to bases in Azerbaijan in preparation for a strike.

For discussion and consideration ...

What are the chances that this administration cares enough about its approval ratings, public sentiment, and the upcoming mid-term elections that it will engage Irans nuclear facilities; knowing that the vast majority of American people would support disarming the "nut job?"

Mebbe the Iranians are putting together a group of experts to fix the Gulf of Mexico oil leak. They plan to sail there by way of the Caspian Sea ;-)

An American airbase in Azerbaijan... Cause otherwise we wouldn't have an airbase close to Iran.

Why does anyone pay any attention to Debka?

However, this does not require trust. We do have a significant increase in firepower over there. Israel has a hawkish PM. I would expect Iran to have it's eyes open. Nevertheless, I don't think for a millisecond that our Commander In Pink will do what needs doing over there.

I’ll believe a strike on Iran’s nuclear sites when it actually happens. There’s been far too many news reports and wild speculation about what might happen to form an accurate assessment anyway.

All this while a very high-level Iranian delegation is in Azerbaijan negotiating/finalizing a cross-Iran natural gas pipeline so that the Azeri's can compete with Russia to sell natural gas to Europe?

Debka leads again......

Wait until Iran gets the bomb and starts some real saber rattling - you will all be pouring over articles like this looking for the slightest hint that the nukes will be falling.

You won’t have long to wait...

Debka’s accuracy can be determined by the geographical location of what they are reporting. The further away from Israel, the less accurate.

Some of their articles are “dry”, in that they are just reposting information found elsewhere, like US ship movements. These are pretty accurate. However, Debka utterly strikes out when guessing US “intentions”.

They are also used as a dumping ground for information and disinformation the Israeli army and intelligence organizations want to publish, though they deny any association at all, and disparage Debka.

One of their big pluses is that they glean from the Arabic and Persian media as well, which is done poorly or not at all by western news services.

The professional version of this is Memri.org, which was openly set up by a retired Israeli military intelligence officer, and is high quality, though its content is often disturbing—a reflection on what Arabs and Iranians are really saying.

This is not good news for Azerbaijan. Roughly half of Iran’s population are Azeri not Iranian. I personally know of no build up of American or Israeli forces in Azerbaijan. I doubt seriousl that the regime would do anything to provoke Iran. They are literally between a rock and a hard place sandwiched between Russian and Iran. This report, if true, tells me Iran wants to apply pressure and maybe take a run at the oil fields in the Caspian. The largest oil company working the Caspian is BP. Don’t know if that provides Iran will courage to squeeze Azerbaijan or not. They certainly have to know that Mr. Skittles has publicly ostracized BP for the benefit of his green lobby and maybe the Iranians think he would never come to their or Azerbaijan’s rescue given an Iranian invasion. Life is getting complicated for Mr. Skittles. His words have meaning even if he doesn’t understand what he says. Damn that teleprompter.

Iran is 50% Persian and 25% Azeri. The Sefavids, who converted Sunni Persia into Shiism as a way of recreating Persian identity were Azeris.
