PLANTATION He kissed and told. She kissed and said it was him. Then she wasn't sure. They drifted apart. Over the years, the memory of a shared national moment bound them.
And now she is gone. Edith Shain, 91, the nurse in the iconic "kissing sailor" photograph, the Times Square clinch marking the end of World War II, died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles.
Carl Muscarello, 83, a retired New York police detective who lives in Plantation, says he remembers that day well, and not just for its historic significance.

Those were the days when we could fight a war and win it.
Those were the days when the United States fought to win wars.
That and the flag-raising at Iwo Jima are probably my two most favorite photos. It sure looks from her stance that the lucky sailor grabbed her and kissed her. God bless her.
Today it’s sexual assault.
Of course there would have to be a pair of pillow-biters front and center to ruin the new photo.
Incredible, isn’t it?
I agree with the comment at the bottom of the page why couldn’t they use the original picture rather than that of a renactment with gay kissers at the right hand of the page/picture?
Yep. Noticed the same thing.
Much better, thanks.
Thanks for ruining the article, Puke Sentinel.
Yeah. noticed that.
Today the sailor would be prosecuted for sexual battery, then sued for sexual harassment. See how our society has matured?
Somethin just ain’t right about that picture!
With her left arm hanging as it is, she obviously didn’t do the grabbing, not sure why the who-grabbed-whom is her obit story. But it was a remarkable moment magnificently captured on film so that we’re talking about it and the parties 65 years later!
I received an email from my friend yesterday informing me of Elaine's passing, along with a link to a project Elaine was heavily involved with - "Keep The Spirit of '45 Alive". A national spokesperson for the project, actually.
A Congressional Resolution has been introduced in the House of Representatives in support of Spirit of 45 Day, a national observation on the weekend of August 14 to commemorate the anniversary of the end of Second World War and to pay tribute to the legacy of the WWII generation.
House Concurrent Resolution 226 (H.Con.Res 226) will lay the foundation for a permanent annual commemoration, which will ensure that the example of service, sacrifice and national unity embodied by these men and women will continue to inspire Americans for generations to come.
They hope people will contact their congresscritters to ask them to support this resolution and make "the second Sunday in every August a national day of remembrance so that the legacy of our "greatest generation" can educate and inspire future generations of Americans."
If anyone is interested in checking out the site, you can check it out here .
From what my friend said about Elaine, she was a neat lady. She'll be sorely missed by those who knew her.
Elaine = Edith
Duh! Brain freeze. :-(
That photo just seemed to capture the moment. The stories my parents told me of the hellish sacrifices, both home and abroad, the pain and suffering, the PATRIOTISM . . . no wonder the euphoria of V-J Day in NYC.
