Plans to evacuate Tampa Bay area are in place
Veterans Today ^ | June 23, 2010 | Maryann Tobin

As FEMA and other government agencies prepare for what is now being called the worst oil spill disaster in history, plans to evacuate the Tampa Bay area are in place.

The plans would be announced in the event of a controlled burn of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico, or if wind or other conditions are expected to take toxic fumes through Tampa Bay.

This practice has been used by the US Forestry service, when fire and smoke threaten the health and well being of people.

The elderly and those with respiratory problems would be more susceptible to health risks, in the event of a controlled burn.

Estimates of the rate of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill have varied. Independent scientists now suggest that the true spill rate, before the riser pipe was cut off in June, was between 20,000 and 50,000 barrels a day.

Since the April 20th explosion, which resulted in the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig, there have been more than a million gallons of chemicals poured into the Gulf of Mexico in efforts to break up the spill. The chemicals have come under scrutiny because of their own toxic nature.

It is not certain if the massive slick will have to be set on fire near Tampa Bay, but the possibility has not been ruled out.

BP has been using controlled burns as a way to contain the oil spill since the crisis began. Plans to do additional controlled burns around the well site were announced by Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen at a briefing in early June.

Why do I have the feeling that burning off large amounts of oil on the water so close to land will just replace one problem with another.
I suspect most aquifers are safe since water normally runs from land to the oceans.
A million tons of sooty oil smoke however will blow in over land and a good portion will settle or rain down.
They should have used oil booms, berms and barges to prevent the oil from reaching land in the first place.
They had two months to prepare for this! They failed.

Worst-case scenario is this thing gushes for decades, so could it possibly burn for decades?

Worst case? Not even close...

I’m still holding out for OilBama to try to blast it shut with a nuke.

It is the worst possible solution, the one most damaging to America, and therefore the one The One is most apt to use.

With luck he can diddle daddle long enough to have to do it in a blind panic just before a major hurricane lances into America’s soft white underbelly.

Such a nuke would:

• Replace an 18” dia pipe leaking oil with a quarter mile wide crater over bedrock shattered all the way down to the full oil deposit.
• Violate international nuclear weapon treaties.
• Flash abundant amounts of sea water into steam both by the bomb itself and the exposed hot crust/magma.
• Provide a thermal turbocharge boost to convert an ordinary hurricane into a continent crossing hypercane.
• Inundate America’s breadbasket farmland with a deluge of radioactive, oily saltwater all the way up to the Canadian border.
• And who knows? It might even shake loose the New Madrid fault.
And as a special bonus he could then use the results to ban all oil drilling and eliminate America’s entire nuclear arsenal.

From his viewpoint, what’s not to love?

And they’re waiting for it to get closer to Tampa....because????

They *want* it to happen so:
... they can get an excuse to stop oil exploration.
... they can crash yet another vibrant sector of the economy (Florida vacations).
... they can spend more taxpayer money (Redistribution).
... they can use images of Florida beaches to scare people with for decades.
... they can practice relocating large populations to FEMA camps.
... they can make people get used to government going in and "take control".
... they can extort even more money from PB.

How am I doing so far?
This is definitely a problem where each ounce of prevention would save a million dollars in cleanup.
I don't see it happening.

“They should have used oil booms, berms and barges to prevent the oil from reaching land in the first place.

“O” was busy golfing and posturing angrily for the cameras.

The entire world is watching this American economic/environmental/political train wreck and also taking the measure (as they should have done previously) of this guy who is supposed to have a grip on things.

With every passing instant and with every delinquent, ill-conceived, ruinous and infuriating response, “O” is looking more and more like the arrogant, inexperienced and incompetent bungler that cautious Conservatives have known him to be from the start.

Like Russia, which is still reeling from their very public and dramatic political/military reverses in Afghanistan- this is an equally dramatic and public embarrassment for the American reputation for resourcefulness and technological superiority, and which we will be along time living down.

In his first term of office President Bush was confronted with the terrorist assaults on America. He surprised many and shocked some with his decisiveness and resolution. Even enemies of the Bush had to commend the resolute approach taken by a man they had challenged as having NO foreign policy experience.

By contrast, “O” is not surprising ANY Conservatives but I am sure that many Liberals are secretly dissatisfied and frustrated with the guy they supported.

You’re right - there are plenty of worst-case scenarios out there (not sure if “worst” is really applicable anymore, since there doesn’t seem to really be a “good” outcome anywhere).

The question is which does the gummint choose - so far it seems content to purposefully let it ride in the hope they can speechify themselves into a position of further power. In order to get power, they need to weaken regular Americans, and they’ve got quite a menu of options from which to choose.

You may be familiar with a coal seam in PA that has been burning for a looooong time now.

But, I’m certainly glad that the EPA and FEMA agree that no one with a breathing condition will be affected in any way, shape, or form if everyone follows their evacuation (shut down FL’s economy) directive.
