Plans to evacuate Tampa Bay area are in place

As FEMA and other government agencies prepare for what is now being called the worst oil spill disaster in history, plans to evacuate the Tampa Bay area are in place.

The plans would be announced in the event of a controlled burn of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico, or if wind or other conditions are expected to take toxic fumes through Tampa Bay.

This practice has been used by the US Forestry service, when fire and smoke threaten the health and well being of people.

The elderly and those with respiratory problems would be more susceptible to health risks, in the event of a controlled burn.

Estimates of the rate of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill have varied. Independent scientists now suggest that the true spill rate, before the riser pipe was cut off in June, was between 20,000 and 50,000 barrels a day.

Since the April 20th explosion, which resulted in the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig, there have been more than a million gallons of chemicals poured into the Gulf of Mexico in efforts to break up the spill. The chemicals have come under scrutiny because of their own toxic nature.

It is not certain if the massive slick will have to be set on fire near Tampa Bay, but the possibility has not been ruled out.

BP has been using controlled burns as a way to contain the oil spill since the crisis began. Plans to do additional controlled burns around the well site were announced by Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen at a briefing in early June.

"Facts! Facts! Facts! I say to hell with facts! Lets PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!"

ROFLMAO!!!! As much as I hate to say it, this situation could stand a little humor injected. One would begin to think that this website was run by Dr. Doom instead of Jim Robinson.

"I'm here on the coast and don't have one. I'm beginning to think maybe I should have one available."

I suspect that they are a lot closer to the main spill site than you are ever likely to be. I VERY seriously doubt that you have anything to worry about. By the time anything in the gas phase gets to where you are (even if you live right on the beach), it will have been diluted well below any danger point.

I don’t know what they think, but in my opinion it’s total BS.

You would have more fumes coming off a freshly laid asphalt road than you would have coming off of the oil that is washing up after having been baking in the sun for weeks.

They're not talking about fumes from the oil on the shoreline; they were referring to the fumes from the controlled burns -- from the oil FIRES creating toxic fumes.

Then, also, there's some talk that the BP oil rig had hit a huge reservoir of methane, and/OR that as sea life dies from the oil that the decomposition creates high levels of methane.

Some reports state that levels of methane are ONE MILLION TIMES higher than normal.

I have NO idea as to the veracity of this.

I’m still trying to figure out a way to get all these people that think they are going to die to turn their worldly possessions over to me.

You got any ideas?

You gotta move inland — the temp is only 95 now with a dew point of 103 !

Isn’t this math like dividing by 0 ?

Inland? heck I’m 5 miles from the beach, how much more do you want?

Would rather be on the beach though.

They don't evacuate entire cities if a refinery catches on fire, it's a limited area at most.

Any controlled burn would be an extremely small amount of oil at any given time.

Any methane buildup is in an extremely small area right near the well. What sounds like a big area is in reality an extremely small area compared to the area of the Gulf.

It's deep water, there is relatively few fish. Fish concentrate in shallow water around structure. Red tide kills a far larger number(millions) of fish right near shore, and cities aren't evacuated for that. It stinks like crap for awhile, but it doesn't produce enough gas to really hurt anything unless you stick your face into it.

What you've got is a bunch of people trying to sound important and justify their jobs, so they are hyping a bunch of crap.

Thank you very much IMR 4350 for such an informative post. I’ve been skeptical about some of these stories.

You left out igniting the methane and oil with the nuke.

I've been receiving weekly situation reports on the state of the threat to FL and Tampa Bay. As of June 24, the oil plume was 285 miles from St. Petersburg, with non contiguous sheens and scattered tarballs closer. Last week, the report indicated the plume was 248 miles from St. Petersburg.

We have occasionally smelled the fumes since late April.

This is the first I've heard about an evacuation plan for Tampa Bay.

You're welcome.

The same people and groups that are pedaling this BS, are the same ones that tried to convince everyone the world was going to end because of the Kuwait oil well fires and the dumping of millions of barrels of oil into the Persian Gulf.

Never happened.

This same bunch also tried to convince everyone the water in New Orleans after Katrina was a “toxic soup” that would make anyone that came in contact with it sick and NO would have to be evacuated and relocated. Lake Pontchartrain was going to be a dead zone.

Never happened.

They don't really have a great track record with the hyped up BS, so that's why I don't pay attention to them.

In the meantime, Florida's turncoat, Obama-loving, fruitcake governor, Charlie Tuna Crisp, is putting no pressure on the president for skimmers or for ANY ACTION AT ALL like Louisiana's Governor Jindal is.

Wow. Thanks for that info, Leni... I've noticed that Crist has been MIA for most of the 67(?) days of this oil disaster. Unbelievable.
