TAMPA - Two Tampa police officers died from injuries sustained during a shooting while they conducted a traffic stop early this morning. A massive search is under way for the suspects a man and woman in a red 1994 Toyota Camry. Officer Jeffrey Kocab, 31, had been with the department for about 14 months and leaves behind a wife who is nine months pregnant. Officer Dave Curtis, 31, had been with the department for almost four years and has four young children.

re: always a mistake!
My son is a uniformed officer here in Florida. It’s amazing how easy it is to let your guard down, even at 2 am. He says you promise yourself you’re going to stay alert and then you realize you’ve done something you know full well you shouldn’t have done and that it could have ended very poorly.
Frankly, if I were being stopped at 2 am for not having a visible license plate I would expect to be treated pretty officially. Certainly not badly, but I would expect to see an officer on guard for his or her safety.
I NEVER drive past an officer on a stop without slowing down and taking notice of what’s going on. If it’s early in the event, the officer has not gotten out of his car yet, I will often pull over a bit down the road and just watch for a moment to see what’s going on. Not that I would be of any help to him or her in the event of trouble, but I could at least make sure they got help quickly.
We live in an increasingly dangerous and unpredictable world. And there’s really nothing being done to improve the situation. All we ever hear is about cut backs in police service, and you have to know that each one increases the danger to them.
Thoughts and prayers to those involved in this event. It’s going to be a sad Fourth for several Tampa families.
I work 2 minutes from where this all went down. I had to completely divert my commute path to get the office this morning. There are choppers everywhere around the area and LEOs are stacked up and down 50th street.
The perp was wanted on a fraudulent check charge. Apparently he was asked to get out of the car, questioned, and when the cops were walking back to their cruisers, they were both shot in the head. One dead, one not expected to make it.
Somebody get the Reverend Al Sharpton on the line!!
Looks to me like Tampa Police will be racially profiling to find the perpetrators. Rev. Sharpton and Jackson do no like profiling. Of course, the way to solve this is to stop as many whites as blacks to find the culprits. Then there would be no profiling. Is not this profiling stuff a bunch of crap?
Obama gave them permission to kill?
Be a crying shame if something were to happen to the perps while ‘resisting arrest’...a real shame.
This is an example of WHY you get cops punching overly aggressive young girls in the face... because it’s justified.
A simple stop, and two cops aren’t coming home tonite.
When I’m pulled over (which is rare), it’s always “Ma’am and Sir”, and if I was speeding I simply say “I have no excuse, I was speeding.”
A little advice to all the cop-haters: the above usually results in a verbal warning and a “have a nice day and slow down”....
I can’t wait for the day when these two POS’s are strapped to a gurney, needles stuck into their arms and the Sodium Thiopental starts to flow.
From several accounts, the female driver was in the car and the male was asked to step out. Why they LEOs didn’t search him before they questioned him is beyond me. 2 AM in this part of town, you don’t take ANY risks. This part of Tampa is riddled with crime and is only a few miles away from where another Tampa LEO lost his life last year.
Perp was obviously not handcuffed.
Perhaps he was shouting, “Rodney King, Rodney King, Rodney King” and, as such, the police did not want to handcuff him and be accused by City Council or the Mayor’s Office of police brutality!
What a horrifying story.
God Bless these brave men and help their families through the very hard times ahead. Bless the little baby who will never know her father.
I guess their only chance is to call a reporter and be escorted arms-high into a police station while on camera.
When asked why he was shot so many times, the sheriff said because that was all the bullets they had.
Jeffrey Kocab
Prayers for their families and friends.
Permission? No. Lunacy of the belief that we’d have “world peace.”
Black America can finally feel liberated because "one of them" sits in the 'House. Racist whites acknowledged their mistakes and gave them what was owed them. End of racial squabbles. Whites are no longer then enemy. Peace at last. Utopia. Baraq Hussein Obama is the president.
At the rate this country is decaying; I don't believe police officers should be taking any risks anywhere anymore...
Screw the Sodium Thiopental. I say they u se liquid Drano!
Screw the Sodium Thiopental. I say they use liquid Draino!
I’ve been following this tragic story since I got up this morning to get ready for work. The car was stopped because it had no license plate on it.
The second officer died a little while ago. Once again, Tampa has lost two people police officers who were only doing their jobs.
I have no words to properly convey how much hatred I have for worthless lumps of manure like these two killers.
I prefer injecting them with Potassium Chloride, the drug that causes the actual respiratory and cardiac arrest, without the benefit of the barbiturate that first knocks them unconscious. Let them feel the excruciating pain when they die. Then dump their worthless bodies in the city landfill.
