Obama Knew of Spies Before Medvedev Talk
Sky News ^ | June 30, 2010 | Staff

US President Barack Obama knew about the FBI operation to smash an alleged Russian spy ring before meeting President Dmitry Medvedev last week, but did not raise it at the talks, an aide said.

But the White House said the revelations, which were condemned by Russia, would not interfere with the effort by both sides to 'reset' their relations, which has been pursued ever since Obama took office last year.

The alleged operation was busted just a few days after a warm summit between Obama and Medvedev at the White House at which both sides made an elaborate effort to bury any lingering Cold War tensions.

'I do not believe this will affect the reset of our relationship with Russia,' White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

'We have made great progress in the past year and a half. I do not think this will affect those relations.'

Gibbs said Obama had been briefed on what he termed a law enforcement issue and had known about it before he met Medvedev, but did not raise it at the talks and a joint trip to a burger joint in suburban Virginia last week.

The State Department meanwhile said the 11 alleged Russian agents arrested this week were 'vestiges' of 'old attempts to use intelligence,' but the relationship between the two Cold War foes was still improving.

I’m not sure I get this story. My understanding is that none of the suspects had access to any classified information. What kind of information did they have access to that people couldn’t find on something like facebook?

This is dog bites man story. Of course, Medvedev “knew” about the Russian spies (as he knows about the many others that still reside here and in other nations around the world). This whole thing can’t keep me from wondering just how many deep cover spies WE have in Russia!

Why do they even need spies anymore with the NYT and the Obama Administration.

Zero knew about the raids. He probably wanted to stop it. However, had Zero stopped the raids, these agents would have publicly embarrassed him.

Obama is a pathological liar so I never believe a single word he says.

Most likely, he was upstaged by the truth (about the spies) AFTER he his little theatre act to show the world that he's now great buddies with the Russians.

He figures if he lies to the Press by saying that he already knew of the spies when he and Medvedev were grinning like bosom buddies, it makes him appear clever and on top of the situation (i.e. there must be more to the matter than can be seen on the surface).

If he admits to the Press that he didn't know about the spies at the time of the Hell Burger luncheon, he looks like the naive buffoon he is (grinning like a hyena while his dining partner and new BFF is spying on him behind his back).

I am enjoying one aspect of this. The revelations just days after the hellburger summit makes O look the fool.

Most likely there are those in our Justice Department that are sick and tired of his antics.

Seems Russia has its’ own intentions as Obama plays catch and release.

Yours is the most relevant and discerning post of all. Something is SOoooooo fishy about this whole story. In my opinion 99% of the story is being withheld from us.

So far as we've been told, this is a group of harmless spies who knew no one, spied on nothing, hurt nobody, unearthed nothing and told nobody nothing.....but got paid blood money for it by the Soviets over a period of many years.

I'd bet my life the traitor Obama is covering up for his friend and fellow Marxist in the Kremlin.

Is there no one in the government or in the intelligence community that is brave enough to leak what's really the case with these spies who are evidently being made out to be the hapless, harmless Lavender Hill Gang?
