Arlington student's plea for the Pledge unsuccessful
GateHouse News Service ^ | June 28, 2010 | Linda Kush

Sean Harrington, a senior at Arlington High School, faced the School Committee on Tuesday with frustrated tears in his eyes.

He had just come tantalizingly close to realizing his dream: he wanted every student in the Arlington schools to have the chance to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each school day.

But in spite of Harrington’s impassioned speech citing mothers who lost children in Iraq and aging Baby Boomers left mentally shattered after Viet Nam, the committee vote was tied 3 - 3, and the measure failed.

School Committee members Joseph Curran, Cindy Starks and Chairman Joseph Curro voted to reinstitute the pledge, while Leba Heigham, Kirsi Allison-Ampe and Judson Pierce voted no. Jeff Thielman was absent.

“Please … it’s the last day!” Sean pleaded after the votes were tallied...

...There is even a Massachusetts law making daily recitation of the pledge mandatory, but that law is routinely ignored because it contradicts federal court decisions that say compelling someone to say the Pledge of Allegiance violates freedom of speech.

When I was in public school (Tennessee), 1950 to 1962, the pledge was said in home room every morning.
That was when America was the grand old USA.
Now it is the USSA.

Arlington is almost as moonbat as Cambridge.

Having 3 members support the pledge was a shock.

Where is Joe McCarthy when we really need him? Anyone who votes against saying the Pledge of Allegiance is a communist and has NO PLACE serving in any government in the USA.

You have to see the Letter to the Editor last week complaining of a USO insert in the paper. She said she was canceling her subscription because of the “propaganda” portraying our military as the good guys.

“Where is Joe McCarthy when we really need him?”

....I think a new type of militant patriotism is going to arise in this country...it will be full of people like me who aren’t going to take it any more.

It's really much more like Leba Heigham, Kirsi Allison-Ampe and Judson Pierce simply like to hurt people.

How can people like this be left alone with young children?

Arlington is almost as moonbat as Cambridge.

I think it's only about 10% hard core communist, but a lot of the rest of them go along with it.

Stand and pledge anyway.

When the board calls it ‘school disruption’,respond that you are taking a page from Bill Ayers playbook and practicing ‘political dissent’.

Turn the tables on the left and they get real agitated.

The vote was 3-3 with one not present, as close as it could possibly be without passing.

Something tells me that the vote was discussed and agreed upon before they walked into the room to have the least amount of controversy, but I’ve been wearing my tinfoil hat a bit tight lately also.

I'm a substitute teacher in our public schools. The Pledge is recited each day, along with a moment of silence. One middle school principal also includes her 'Thought for the Day', which is many times Judeo/Christian based! Mostly I sub in Special Ed rooms... the kids able to recite the Pledge are so proud to do so. Very touching.

Too bad this doesn't happen in every school, every day.

at the risk of being flamed...

mandatory reciting of a pledge or oath means nothing.

make the country worth living in and the oathes of allegiance will come.

as a man of principles, and of my word, shouldn’t i only have to say a pledge once.

educate not indoctrinate, that goes both ways.

(donning flame resistant suit)

I don’t understand this. No one is stopping any student who wants to, from reciting the pledge whenever they want including in the morning before classes.

I have contacted my Brothers at the Arlington Knights of Columbus to see if this young man’s effort can be honored.
