Israel planning attacks on Iran

Islamabad, Wednesday, 30 June, 2010

THE Daily Mail has learnt that Israel is massing warplanes in the Caucasus for an attack on Iran. Preparations are underway to launch the military attack from Azerbaijan and Georgia, reports Akhbar Al Khaleej, quoting military sources. It has been reported that Israel was, in fact, training pilots in Turkey to launch the strike and was smuggling planes into Georgia using Turkish airspace, according to the sources. It is appalling that, Turkey was unaware of Israel’s intention of transferring the planes to Georgia, the sources said. The unexpected crisis between Israel and Turkey following an Israeli commando raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza Strip hit Israeli calculations. Azerbaijan-based intelligence units, working under the cover of technicians, trainers and consultants, have helped with the preparations, the sources have revealed. Military equipment, mostly supplied by the US, was transported to a Georgian port via the Black Sea. Georgian coastguard and Israeli controllers are co-operating to hide the operations from Russian vessels, said the sources. They point out that according to Israel, it will not be in a position to launch a strike on Iran without using bases in Georgia and Azerbaijan due to the limited capabilities of its nuclear submarines stationed near the Iranian coast.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Press TV reported that a very large contingent of US ground forces had massed in Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border. The independent Azerbaijani news website Trend confirmed the report. Those reports came just days after the Pentagon confirmed that an unusually large fleet of US warships had indeed passed through Egypt’s Suez Canal en route to the Gulf. At least one Israeli warship reportedly joined the American armada. Iran’s Press TV also quoted Iranian Revolutionary Guard Brigadier General Mehdi Moini as saying that the country’s forces are mobilized and ready to face Israeli and American “misadventures” near its borders.Meanwhile, The Daily Mail has learnt from IRNA sources that Iran has cancelled plans to send an aid ship to the Gaza Strip as Israel had sent a letter to the UN saying that the presence of Iranian and Lebanese ships in the Gaza area will be considered a declaration of war on that regime and it will confront it. The US is apparently in knowledge of Israel’s plans since CIA Director Leon Panetta says Iran probably has enough low enough low-enriched uranium for two nuclear weapons, but that it likely would take two years to build the bombs. Panetta also says he is doubtful that recent U.N. penalties will put an end to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He says the penalties could help to weaken Tehran’s government by creating serious economic problems. But he adds, “Will it deter them from their ambitions with regards to nuclear capability? Probably not.” Panetta told ABC’s “This Week” that there is “some debate” as to whether Iran will proceed with the bomb. Asked about a potential Israeli military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Panetta hedged the issue by claiming that he thinks Israel is giving the U.S. room on the diplomatic and political fronts.Iran’s response is that it intended to punish the West for imposing new sanctions by delaying talks on its nuclear plans and warned inspections of its ships in connection with the program could provoke retaliation. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a news conference that Iran was prepared to return to talks but only by the second half of the Muslim festival of Ramadan — in late August. “It’s a punishment to teach them a lesson to know how to have a dialogue with nations,” he said. The West suspects Iran’s nuclear program is designed to produce nuclear weapons but Tehran says it is for fuel and medical use. When asked what Iran would do if its ships were inspected, the hardliner president said: “If they make the slightest mistake we will definitely retaliate.” He did not elaborate. The Daily Mail opines that Israel would be in for a shock if it takes up the foolhardy route of attacking Iran as it is not going to treat the matter lightly and is fully capable of an effective riposte.
