NRA holding its fire on Kagan, puzzling other on right

The National Rifle Association is keeping its powder dry on a second straight Supreme Court nominee, even as other conservative groups and Republican lawmakers have sharply questioned nominee Elena Kagan's views on gun ownership and other issues.

As Ms. Kagan's confirmation hearing entered its second day, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said Tuesday that the powerful lobby group has not yet taken a position on President Obama's choice, even though the NRA has publicly stated that Ms. Kagan's views appear to be "out of the mainstream" and at times "extremely troubling."

"The KKK references are bizarre," said Mr. Arulanandam, referring to notes Ms. Kagan apparently took during a phone conversation in which somebody characterized the NRA and the Ku Klux Klan as "bad guy" organizations. Ms. Kagan said Tuesday the notes recorded someone else's comments, not hers, and called the comparison "ludicrous."

The NRA issued a statement Monday, the first day of the hearings, noting that "because Ms. Kagan has no judicial record and few academic writings, the NRA is carefully reviewing her record in other government posts."

The statement continued, "What we've seen to date shows a hostility toward our right to keep and bear arms, such as her role in developing the Clinton administration's 1998 ban on importation of many models of semi-automatic rifles," but did not call for her nomination to be rejected.

The gun group, which has clashed at times with its conservative allies on other issues in recent days, waited until the conclusion of Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings last year to announce its opposition to her Supreme Court bid, and to announce that a senator's vote would be "scored" on its influential ranking of member voting records.

Ms. Sotomayor comfortably won confirmation, with nine Senate Republicans voting for her...

If you want to call the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action, the number is 800-392-8683. When you start to get number options, click on 4. I had to wait a few minutes. I was told that they would probably score the Kagan vote. Tell them that they should announce that they will score the Kagan confirmation vote as early as possible.

The NRA does what is best for NRA in their minds.

Sure they back Democrats who fund anti-gun groups and support anti-gun judges and stuff, as long as they SAY they are pro-gun. ie, Harry Reid.

Every time an organization on the right becomes effective, the left attempts to infiltrate it. It’s starting to look like the left has succeeded in doing this to the NRA.

If the NRA should chime in why not NAACP and NOW?

The NRA support or lack of support for commie Kagan is another straw man which gets in the way of proving Kagan is an unfit nominee.

Kagan hates freedom and will support Barry until she dies. Barry and the boys from Chicago have no intention to ever leave the White House.

Sotomayer and Kagan will uphold and build upon the crimes Barracky has already decreed and will do in the future.

NRA is quickly shedding its patriotic roots, and becoming a mere political special interest lobby whore.
It could be that I’m just waking up to facts that many others already know.

IMO, the NRA seems to have tilted to the left a bit with Charlton Heston at the helm, and since him, it’s become more of a political group interested in money more than 1st and 2nd amendment freedoms.

In light of the DISCLOSE debacle, and the rumor that NRA staffers have been told not to criticize Kagan publicly, I’ve dropped my membership in favor of supporting both the GOA and Dudley Brown at www.nationalgunrights.org . The NRA is very self serving, and has been for quite a few years. It is time to drop them and the Republican party off of a cliff.

I am not as aware of details and history as you, dear friend, but it seems obvious to me now, that their next step is to fold bit-by-bit until their are no gun rights. The Constitution if First, and Gun Rights follow. You cannot compromise on Constitution, and expect to remain free. IMHO

The NRA wisely chooses when to fight and when not to..

You could spend every dime in the ILA chasing rabbits. Fighting losing battles or you can save you political muscle and apply to the proper joints at the proper time to the best effect.

It really is for the smaller Gun Groups to stir the pot in many cases. Keep the pressure up..

Think of the technique as a Continuum of force..

The left pulls this with the Sierra Club for example using other smaller more radical groups to suggest the SC is reasonable.
