Portland police will investigate accusations that Al Gore groped woman

The Oregonian

A Portland massage therapist accused former Vice President Al Gore of "unwanted sexual contact" at a hotel during an October 2006 visit, but no charges were filed due to lack of evidence, law officials said last week. Today, Portland police officials say they will reopen the investigation.

Portland police announced today that it will re-open and investigate a Portland massage therapist’s allegations that former Vice President Al Gore sexually assaulted her at a downtown hotel in October 2006.

The announcement comes as the therapist went public for the first time, telling the National Enquirer that she demanded a full police investigation of her complaint.

Molly Hagerty is photographed in the latest edition of the National Enquirer, holding the black pants she wore that night. She’s quoted saying she paid for a DNA analysis of a stain on the pants. The paper also mentioned videotape footage from the Hotel Lucia, where the encounter occurred, and named a computer consultant who told the tabloid that Hagerty called her at about 4 a.m. Oct. 24, 2006, and told her immediately about details of the attack.

Portland police said last week they considered the case closed unless new evidence surfaced. Police did not explain their decision today.

"Consistent with our policy regarding open investigations, the Police Bureau will not be commenting on any additional specifics regarding this case at this time,'' Portland Det. Mary Wheat, bureau spokeswoman, said in a news release.

A Gore family spokeswoman released a statement disputing Hagerty’s account.

"The Gores cannot comment on every defamatory, misleading, and inaccurate story generated by tabloids," said the response issued by spokeswoman Kalee Kreider. "Mr. Gore unequivocally and emphatically denied this accusation when he first learned of its existence three years ago. He stands by that denial."

» Hear the police interview with the massage therapist Hagerty first filed a complaint through her attorney two months after the 2006 encounter, but then refused to meet with detectives on three occasions. Then in January 2009, she presented a detailed statement to Portland sexual assault investigators.

She told investigators that Gore groped her, kissed her and made unwanted sexual advances during a late-night massage session in a suite at the upscale Hotel Lucia. She said she told two friends and kept the clothes she wore that night, including her black pants with stains on them. But Portland police didn’t contact any of the woman’s friends, obtain the potential evidence or interview anyone at the hotel, records show.

"The case was not investigated any further because detectives concluded there was insufficient evidence to support the allegations," the Portland Police Bureau said in a prepared statement last week.

The Oregonian generally does not name people who report sexual assaults, but is naming Hagerty because she has made her allegations public.

Today, the district attorney’s office said it had no further comment, but stands by its statement issued last week. In that, Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk said: "If the complainant and the Portland Police Bureau wish to pursue the possibility of a criminal prosecution, additional investigation by the Bureau will be necessary and will be discussed with the Portland Police Bureau."

If he is found guilty, he should be impeached, convicted and removed from the taxpayers’ payroll.

We shall see. About 10 years ago $350 - $500 was a common fee for an unremarkable prostitute in tourist and hotel areas. If he really gets cornered, he will probably admit that he did indeed call for a midnight therapeutic massage because he was tired and down, and that while he was vulnerable and alone she took advantage of his innocent and altruistic self. She then tried to blackmail him later with no success, became angry and thus reported the incident. Do I believe this? No. I just made it all up. But I do expect this defense.

I tend to believe her narrative, largely because it is so weird and barely under control, which is consistent with his strange character.

Our analyses differ. I hope you prove to be correct.

I do agree with you that this is going to be VERY expensive for the sex crazed poodle in question. I suspect it has already cost him his marriage.

well let me be more clear and maybe we were just talking past each other. You said she had a weak case. If you mean it in assessing in the sense that Gore will probably pay a bunch of lawyers and get off. I agree that is likely the outcome.

But the first threshold is whether this even goes to trial. A really weak case would not make it that far. I think there is enough evidence (from what we’ve heard) including DNA evidence that I see this going to a trial. That’s why I don’t consider it a “weak case”. The wild card is the judge.

After the alleged incident, the woman said she was dissuaded from contacting the police by liberal friends of hers, whom she refers to as "The Birkenstock Tribe," and of which she counts herself a member.

"It's like being the ultimate traitor," the woman said. One friend "was basically asking me to just suck it up, otherwise the world's going to be destroyed from global warming," she said.

It's on the AP now!

“unwanted sexual contact”

If it’s because Albert rubbed his “Johnson” up against her....she may to have to settle this one in small claims court.

Unfortunately, many people do not understand massage therapy. Many business people who travel all day and have a hectic schedule during the day followed by business dinner meetings, etc. will ask for a massage therapist at the hour this woman was asked to come to Poodle's room. It is not unusual.

What is unusual is Senor, sorry, Jr. Gore's behavior. I do believe the massage therapist and am convinced there are others who the big man has put on the spot.

The hotel arranges for the therapist so she must be on their list of who to call or she works directly for the hotel.

Not sure they can say some groupie or someone went with the intent of harm because of who he is.

Vice-Presidue only proves that Gore ejaculated (or leaked). It doesn't prove the assault. In the end, assuming "it" is his, it will come down to a he-said/she-said thing. In that case, he comes across as a total pig who engaged in something consensual. Still bad for him.

Perhaps she was trying to squeeze (ahem) Al for some hush money. He didn't pay up, told Tipper about the whole thing, got separated, and now this woman goes through with her threat to press charges and ruin his life...

Just some wild speculation on my part.

Yes, I think we were focusing on different aspects of the case.

Your assessment that there is sufficient evidence for a trial, based on DNA ‘residue’ on her slacks, plus her narrative, I agree with. Convictions have been secured with less.

I just don’t see the likelihood of a conviction in a location that will be so deferential and favorable to the Green Guru, when the principal evidence of a crime is the victim’s verbal testimony against the defendant’s verbal testimony. We know he lies. His entire status and notoriety right now is based on bold faced lies. It will not phase him one bit to take the stand and lie about the incident. This is before we even get to a potential defense of intoxication, if it is allowed in Oregon.

I am reminded of Paula Jones. She would have been utterly crushed but for the floodgates opening of other victims of Clinton’s predations. Perhaps this could happen here.

We shall see. But this will indeed prove to have been a very expensive chakra to release. He really should have kept that poodle on its leash. I wonder if Tipper has had it fixed in the intervening years.

“Apparently Molly has problems doing professional massage anymore because of the incident.”

I imgine she has already lost out on at least a Mill due to pain and suffering, and that does not even come close to the wages she will lose out on in the future.

Algore must pay.
And we shall laugh.
