President Barack Obama said Thursday that being American “is not a matter of blood or birth,” but said that “no matter how decent” the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. are, they should be held accountable for breaking the law.
Speaking at the American University School of International Service in Washington D.C., Obama expressed an understanding for why states would pass individual anti-illegal immigration laws, but said taking such action is “ill conceived.”
The president said laws, such as the one signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer in April, are “divisive,” put pressure on local law enforcement, burden state and local budgets and could potentially violate the rights of innocent American citizens and legal residents.
The Obama administration has come out against Arizona’s immigration law, which requires police officers to question a person’s immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is in the country illegally. The law takes effect July 29.
Obama said Thursday that while America has always defined itself as a nation of immigrants, and while the “overwhelming majority” of illegal immigrants come to the U.S. in search of a better life, “The presence of so many illegal immigrants makes a mockery of all those who are going through the process of immigration legally.”
“Ultimately, our nation, like all nations, has the right and obligation to control its borders and set laws for residency and citizenship,” he said. “And no matter how decent they are, no matter their reasons, the 11 million who broke these laws should be held accountable.”

All it takes to be an American is to be born in the Western Hemisphere. If you want to be a citizen of the United States, it takes being born in the U.S., or granted U.S. citizenship through legal process. It’s that last part that The One wants to manipulate. The Democrat Party DESPERATELY NEEDS the illegal alien vote...otherwise, short of martial law and a cancelled election this fall, they’re TOAST.
Well, then...let's see Obama start with his Auntie from Africa...wherever she now is hiding here illegally. Of course, not really hiding...she probably is working, living in a rent compensated apartment, and getting food stamps. Let's see Obama hold her accountable for breaking the law before he acts on any of the rest of the illegals. Give us an example, oh wise one! Practice what you preach for a change.
And, Obama, don't slough it off on local officials and other courts. You told us they should be held accountable...just how accountable does that mean? Paying a fine, serving jail time, being sent back...what does being "held accountable" really mean? Sounds like more empty words that you spout without any intention of doing anything or believing them yourself. Just your twisted double talk that you have practiced all your life (like the liar you are) and for which you are so famous. So typical.
I think he means that being an American is something that is determined like an aristocracy.

I wonder how many illegal “immigrants” have come into this country since we applied for immigrant visas for my wife’s brother and sister over 10 years ago. We are in the final stages, though it could go south due to financial guarantees. Yep, we have to guarantee that they won’t go on the dole unless they’ve worked for 10 years or become citizens. I should have bought them tickets to Mexico and given them cab fare from there.

This is a phrase dropped to create an impression just like the style in which his books were packaged, to get his audience to forget about insignificant things like birth credentials. It’s all about him. Then after being excused in the minds of his believers he shifts back to ‘other’ illegals in his ‘above it all’ aire, “...they should be held accountable for breaking the law”. Vintage Clinton, say one thing in a clause, finish the sentence with a contradiction, committing to nothing.

While I detest Obama, and realize what he’s doing, we should consider what makes an American. Are only those that are born here Americans. Some of the most patriotic committed Americans that I have met are naturalized.
