She was a vivacious young queen when she first saw New York City in 1957, regal in white gloves but as dazzled as any tourist. 'snip'Nearly two decades later, in 1976, the 50-year-old queen made her second visit to New York, marking the Bicentennial of Americas Declaration of Independence from Britain.
Now, in the twilight of a reign that has spanned 58 years, one of the longest of any British monarch, the 84-year-old queen is to visit New York on Tuesday for a third time, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. 'snip'In contrast to her first two visits to the city what might be called her awe-struck first impressions and her more mature celebratory return this is to be a short, relatively solemn occasion: a valedictory at the United Nations, a reflective half-hour at ground zero and a stroll through a garden created in the canyons of Lower Manhattan as a memorial to the 67 Britons killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
'snip'In the late afternoon, she will go to ground zero. She will make no speech, but will be met by an honor guard and by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Govs. David A. Paterson of New York and Christopher J. Christie of New Jersey. She will briefly tour the 16-acre site, where thousands died and where today new skyscrapers are rising, with reflecting pools in the footprints of the fallen twin towers.
Finally, in the early evening, the queen will cross Lower Manhattan to the British Garden in Hanover Square, a serene greensward memorial to the British subjects who died at the trade center on Sept. 11, 2001. Relatives of some 50 victims will meet the queen, who will cut a ribbon to formally open the garden.

No one tells Her Majesty, the Queen, what to wear.
We are not amused.
I don’t know if the same occasion.
You’re right! The photos of Ascot and with Baroness Thatcher are from last week. The dress the Queen is wearing looks the same as the dress she wore to meet President Bush.
Waste not, want not!
Her Majesty routinely rewears the same clothing. She grew up in the war under rationing that lasted after it as well (her wedding dress was covered by ration coupons). She detests the idea of waste caused by silly ideas of not rewearing clothes simply because of who she is.
Queen Elizabeth has always had class and grace. England has every right to be so very proud of her.
Yes, and I have read that she tries to save and reuse ribbons, packaging, etc. from the opened family Christmas presents. In spite of the royal trappings and privileges, she is very much like everyone else - the average person - in many ways.
I bet she can hardly wait to have her ipod updated with Obummer’s latest speeches.
Yes - certain circumstances do require her to wear something new for reasons of protocol (it might be seen as an insult if she did not) but those are limited - and the clothing she wears on those occasions, is then worn on others.
She also has the advantage of staff who can alter an existing dress to make it appear a bit different - but it isn’t at all uncommon to see her in something she has worn before unaltered.
She gives us gifts of value from the heart. Bambam gives her (what was it? An Ipod?).
“Britain has always been Americas best friend and ally.”
Well, I wouldn’t say “always.” There was that little spat we celebrated this past weekend, then that flare-up in 1812. But once all that family feudin’ ended, they have been our best ally.
Much of that friendship and alliance WAS based on the commonality of culture (and bloodlines) between Britain and the US. Both countries have changed dramatically in the past couple of decades, especially demographically so that cultural tie that binds is being diluted. We’re all so diverse now!
Being a British monarch, having so many opportunities in each day, to botch the job — that’s a tough row to hoe. And yet she’s done her job splendidly, every day, for almost 60 years.
Does one’s heart good to see a life conducted so consistently well.
#15—What a great pic!
bttt
I would like to add that the Queen’s wardrobe is made up of classic suits and dresses that are appropriate for the occasion, therefore wearing them more than once is not considered something to laugh at. However, Meeshell wears those gawd-awful designer sleeveless things that stand out like a sore thumb so we are constantly aware when she wears something inappropriate more than once.
Thank you for the heads up, Cincinna!
I agree. It's unfortunate she has to endure the unbelievably hot weather today... hopefully she's not outside too long today.
Thanks Cincinna.
If she puts her imprimatur on that mosque while she’s in town, uh, rather than say what I think should happen, I’ll instead give my frank opinion on her fashion sense.
I’m sure she won’t make any comment on the mosque in NYC, because she knows it is not her place to make one. She wouldn’t interfere in this sort of local issue, especially since it’s not even in her country.
Please note: there is no visit to Obama, no White House, no DC. The Queen is just coming to Manhattan to pay her respects to the 9/11 fallen, and dedicate the British Memorial Garden to the 67 Brits murdered by terrorists on 911 in the WTC.
