I have come to realize that FReepers know more about guns than any group of people on the planet. So here goes.
Do you I need a special kind of shotgun that will take slugs (i.e. rifle-bore)?
Any recommendations for a .22LR semi-auto rifle for varmints and small game (14+1 or better)

I’ve found Mossberg’s Model 500 to be a sturdy platform (mine is 12 ga.) that handles rifled slugs, and isn’t too pricey.

There are very few shotguns that will not shoot slugs. Make sure you do not get one with a Damascus steel barrel. Doubtful if you will even see one tho.
INMO, a Ruger 10-.22 is the best considering price. Very reliable, very accurate with the right ammo. Mine is a constantly accurate rifle out to 120 - 130 yards. Beyone that takes some luck. If I could only have one rifle, it would be a 10 - .22
I concur on the Ruger 10/22, never had a Papoose. The clincher was when my wife got into shooting. She liked it so much, it became “her gun”. We tricked it out a bit, and darned if she can’t emasculate houseflies w/ it! (outside, of course!)
Ruger 10/22 is a great varmint gun.
For a little less, Marlin makes a very good semi-auto .22 as well.
As for the shotgun, pretty much any of them will take a rifled slug, but you want to get one with a shorter barrel. Mossberg 500 is an excellent choice, and get the home defense package that includes both a 28” barrel for bird hunting and the 20” barrel, and the interchangeable pistol grip. Ithaca makes a very good short-barrel 12 gauge pump shotgun primarily designed for using rifled slugs for deer hunting. It is a little pricier than a Mossberg or Remington.
why would you want to shoot slugs? are you deer hunting? if its for home defense go with buckshot, or a turkey load.
if you are shooting slugs, some shotguns can use a choke designed to shoot slugs and impart some rotation. but with sabot slugs its really not needed.
My choice would be a Ruger 10/22...seems to be the choice of most Freepers too.
For a shotgun, consider a Remington 870. The slug barrel comes with sights. Remove one large nut and you can interchange barrels. The short slug barrel is great for parking by your bedside. You can use the same barrel for deer hunting. Add a longer barrel for birds and small game.
Shotguns are generally fine with all types of ammo ... no special barrel needed. A barrel with a changeable choke tube allows for a quick change choke. Never had much use for rifled slug barrels, I just used buckshot for larger game. Pumps cheapest, Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 good, cheap.
IMHO — The best, most popular 22LR, is the Ruger 10/22. You can get good 25 round mags. I had one many years ago and shot it as my learner gun. Still the best today. Reasonably good enough accurate.
Rifled shotgun barrels are very specialized and are made to shoot sabot slugs. These slugs are much like a rifle bullet and are held in a plastic sabot that engages the rifling to cause the slug to spin. The plastic sabot falls off after leavng the barrel.
A 22WMR (Magnum) is twice as powerful and better for varmints if you are serious.
I’ve been using Lever Actions which are nearly as accurate as a bolt but you can get the second round off much faster.
A 22lr is good for close range, but turtles really turn Muddy Bog into the Red River with a 22wmr.

The Marlin Model 60 is a good, reliable .22 rifle, and it’s inexpensive. Take a look at one. If it’s too plain, then you can keep looking, but it may be all that you need.
As far as the shotgun, as others have pointed out, just about any shotgun will shoot slugs. Pumps are generally less expensive than autoloaders, and very reliable. However, you do feel more recoil with a pump than an autoloader. The Remington 870 is good pump that has been around for a long time. There are a ton of models available with the 870, do some research.
No, just about any modern shotgun will shoot slugs, you do want to avoid full choked guns as they may not be very accurate, the most accurate gun with deer slugs will be(generally)shotguns with a rifled barrel, but I have a remington 870 that was built into a slug gun and it has a smooth bore, extended magazine tube and scope and it is very accurate. Maybe the biggest thing is that rifled barrels will have rifle sights where as most smooth bore shotgun barrels have just one or two beads on the barrel.

The Ruger 10-22 is a classic as is the Marlin Mod 60, the mod.60 being a tubular magazine.
