For 4th of July, instead of going to the Kinderhook (NY) People’s Parade, we decided instead to go to Lenox (MA) and check out Shakespeare & Co.’s reading of the Declaration of Independence. My wife is apolitical and thought it would be fun because we like Shakespeare; I thought it might provide an interesting insight into the Liberal Mind(lessness).
Well, aside from the actual Reading itself, that was about it for Patriotism. No Pledge of Allegiance or anything else like that. The musicians sang some James Taylor and Simon&Garfunkel. We got a dramatic performance that started about how Jefferson, the Washingtons and the Adams liked or didn’t like Shakespeare (nice, interesting start), but then it kind of quickly morphed into Jefferson and his slave relations, racism against a Shakespearean actor, anti-Semitism in Merchant of Vencie, some Othello stuff, and apparently Mandela quoted Shakespeare once so we got a major dose of that, and blah blah blah basically a lot of anti-American crap.
Not the greatest Birthday Party the USA has ever enjoyed.
I wish we’d gone to Kinderhook. http://www.registerstar.com/articles/2010/07/05/news/doc4c31122bc7bff667298189.txt
Libs often say they’re patriotic. Only catch is that their definition of patriotism isn’t in the dictionary.
