It’s a term from the time of feudalism. It’s literal meaning is “the right of the lord”, or colloquially “the right of the first night”. When a young peasant girl was betrothed and married it was the custom that the local lord, baron, duke, etc., IOW, the local guy in charge, could claim the right to sleep with her first, before her husband could exercise his husbandly rights.
