EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Marshals confirmed to ABC-7 Friday afternoon that a body found in a Sunland Park, N.M. landfill was that of a federal inmate who escaped the El Paso jail earlier in the day.
Carlos Roberto Medina-Bailon, 30, of Delicias, Mexico, is believed to have escaped the El Paso County Detention Facility between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Friday by using the garbage disposal system.

I just noticed that he wasn’t convicted, so I will not assume guilt...

The trash prolly now has to be passed through a grating instead of the open end of a chute.

Well, it WAS a safety hazard (one prisoner might stuff another one down the chute of the old system, and as pointed out not all there are even convicted of crimes, let alone things like murder).

I have seen compactors in action at large retailers,etc..It is usually just a flate plate affixed to a large hydraulic ram;there is a relief valve that sets the maximum compression force so the ram or the container won't be damaged. They are also rather noisy due to the large electric motor/hydraulic pump ,so that a person's screams might not be heard. The pressure is usually sufficient to squish all the air and empty space out of the trash but not really condense solid objects.
I would expect any person hiding inside the trash to die of suffocation and probably also have bruised internal organs, broken ribs, and dislocated joints. This assumes he was hiding amongst a bunch of the usual cardboard boxes, etc. If a person was the ONLY item in the container when it was cycled the results would resemble roadkill.

El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles admitted Friday morning there was flaw in the way trash was disposed of at the jail and said they have fixed that flaw to prevent future escapes.

Think of the money saved when they bury him in a wooden match box instead of a coffin.
