It's worse than that. It's by default creating a no-man's land where anything and everything goes. Think of Taliban-era Afghanistan or modern-day Somalia - am not expecting anything that extreme here, but wherever there is a lack of law and order you can count on some sort of bad guys moving in and setting up shop every time. And there's never any telling just who or what the hell they are. That's why it is important to defend every single grain of US soil, even if that grain is part of desolate real estate just helping to hold the planet together, denying bad guys ease of access and use is worth the effort and expense in the long run.
