Calls to protest Arizonas tough illegal-immigration law fell flat in Boston yesterday as barely 400 people rallied in opposition to Gov. Jan Brewer and her policy to use ID checks to arrest illegals.
Organizers had predicted the gathering would draw thousands, but less than 400 people - some of them counter-protesters - showed up for the Copley Square rally.
After the two-hour gathering, protesters marched in a downpour through Back Bay to the Sheraton Hotel, where Brewer, a Republican, attended the National Governors Association meeting.
Marchers shouted, Brewer says get back! We say fight back! and Boycott Arizona! as they slogged through the sodden streets waving signs, chanting in Spanish and English, and blasting music.
They were kept about 100 yards from the hotel.
Brewers spokesman did not respond to a request for comment yesterday. Governors association spokeswoman Jodi Omear said the protests did not disrupt the meeting.
Todd Domke, a Republican media strategist, said he wasnt surprised at the low turnout, given public opinion polls in the state.
Polls show people are against immigration, against giving benefits to illegal immigrants, he said. The passion is clearly more on the side of those who favor the Arizona law.

An earlier thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2550343/posts) mentioned that the pro-illegals were busing in people. I take it that union people had better things to do on a Saturday than protest for these idiots.
Every time a union group buses in folks...they are paying for this...and it comes straight out of the money that each guy worked and sweated over. That working guy has no control over his union and the method of pay-out. That’s the sad part about this story.
>> as barely 400 people rallied in opposition
Large or small opposition turnout, the facts remain that the vast majority of Americans want the illegals to get on the legal immigration line - the back of the line.
Yep. The poor working guy has no choice. I’m sure there are many that follow the union line, but most probably cringe when they hear their so called leadership. Maybe some of the Tea Party spirit can spread to union folk.
>> That working guy has no control over his union and the method of pay-out. Thats the sad part about this story.
A union does not exist without the cooperation of its members. The “sad part” is the indignity a Conservative must endure being part of one.

“Arizonas tough illegal-immigration law” Isn’t tough and it isn’t new, and it isn’t an immigration law.
It isn’t Fed nor State, its state lookin out for local.
Kinda American Rab thinks.
“After the two-hour gathering, protesters marched in a downpour through Back Bay to the Sheraton Hotel”
“as they slogged through the sodden streets”
I find it funny how the article makes it sound as if low turn out was surprising, then goes on to describe storm-conditions as if it were an afterthought.
That said, most people are furious about Obama’s (and to be fair, Bush before him) failure to secure the border or even enforce the law. At least, to date, Obama hasn’t attempted amnesty like McCain probably would have, but his administration’s decision to sue Arizona can only lead to disaster for him and the democrat party alike. He isn’t even turning voters off one at a time, he’s ticking off entire handfuls.
It didn't look like 400 to me.
With one lawmaker citing President Lincoln's respect for the rule of law, the Massachusetts Senate passed a far-reaching crackdown this afternoon on illegal immigrants and those who would hire them, going further, senators said, than any immigration bill proposed over the past five years.
In a surprising turn of events, the legislation replaced a narrower bill that was passed Wednesday over the objections of Republicans. The measure, which passed on a 28-10 vote as an amendment to the budget, would bar the state from doing business with any company found to break federal laws barring illegal immigrant hiring. It would also toughen penalties for creating or using fake identification documents, and explicitly deny in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants.
The amendment would also require the states public health insurance program to verify residency through the Department of Homeland Security, and would require the state to give legal residents priority for subsidized housing. Supporters, especially Republicans, struck patriotic notes and spoke of the sanctity of the law as they spoke on the Senate floor.
It was President Lincoln -- and Im going to paraphrase here -- who suggested that respect for the law should be preached from every pulpit taught by every mother to every child, said Senator Bruce Tarr, a Gloucester Republican.

I see the "AnswerCoalition.org" bumper sticker on the podium. Isn't that a Communist Party USA group?
“the pro-illegals were busing in people.”
Give a communist bum a sandwich and a bottle of Ripple and he’ll hop on a bus to anywhere, including hell.
“Yep. The poor working guy has no choice.”
Life is full of choices. Choosing a career, job, location which virtually requires union membership is a choice.
so true...my husband couldn’t take it.
Maybe we should offer a $1,000,000 prize to anyone who can find one scintilla of divergence between the CPUSA and the Democrats platform.
The "Congressional Progressive Caucus" must be targeted and destroyed as well their allies in the press and academia.
No holds barred, take no prisoners, name names and make these red bastards pay dearly for the consequences of nearly one hundred years of insidious and unrelenting attacks on capitalism and judeo-christian morality.
CPUSA And Obama Platforms Are Identical
Forget for the moment about Bill Ayers and Obamas other Communist friends and mentors of the distant past.
From the current Election 2008′ brochure from the Communist Party Of The United States (a pdf file):
A new day is dawning. Our country is at a turning point. This is a time of great possibility.

The choice is clear. Stay with the Bush-McCain race to the bottom or raise up the whole country with a landslide defeat of the Republican ultra-right on November 4.
A new day is dawning. Our country is at a turning point. This is a time of great possibility. Across the land, people are coming together to reshape our nations priorities to make government of, by and for the people a reality.
From the Midwest to the South, from coast to coast, in big cities and rural communities voters have turned out in record numbers for change.
A landslide vote on November 4 can open the way to recovery from the very deep wounds of the Bush administration and decades of corporate right-wing control.
There is a crisis in every critical area of national life. Profits at the top are record high, but families cant make ends meet. Trillions are squandered in Iraq, but 45 million are without health care. Billions are spent on tax breaks to the super rich, but working families are losing their homes and young people cant afford higher education.
Working people want bold new policies to end war restore democratic traditions and create green living wage jobs, affordable housing, healthcare and quality education for everyone.
Republican John McCain, the candidate of the military industrial complex, will continue the Bush agenda. 100 years in Iraq, Social Security privatization, and tax cuts for the rich. His Republican partners in Congress have blocked, stalled or gutted every bill that benefits working people since they lost majority control in 2006.
Although the ultra-right is weakened and divided, they continue to push fear, division, racism and anti-immigrant bigotry in this years elections, aided and abetted by the corporate media. These multi-pronged poisonous tactics can only be overcome with unbreakable unity.
The choice is clear. Stay with the Bush-McCain race to the bottom or raise up the whole country with a landslide defeat of the Republican ultra-right on November 4.
Voters are demanding a new kind of politics to rebuild our country for the common good. A democratic spirit of unity and hope is inspiring millions to get involved.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, unemployed workers and their allies marched and organized until public works jobs, Social Security and New Deal programs were won. In the 1960s the great civil rights movement won the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
In 2008, union members, African Americans, Latinos, youth and women, seniors, environmental and peace voters are forging a powerful new all encompassing movement that makes great changes possible.
Help make history. Talk with co-workers, neighbors, friends and family. Volunteer to knock on doors, make calls, get online to turnout a landslide defeat of the Republican ultra-right on November 4, and keep the movement going.
EMERGENCY PROGRAM TO REPAIR, RENEW AND REBUILD
We offer these proposals as a contribution toward the bold policy changes necessary to meet the immediate needs of working people, eliminate poverty and move our country forward with a new President and Congress. Expand voting rights. Enact publicly financed elections, same day registration, voting rights for ex-felons, verifiable voting equipment, and instant runoff voting. Restore Fairness Doctrine in media.
4. Strength through Peace
Withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq with no bases or U.S. corporations left behind. Full care for returning veterans. No war on Iran or expansion of troops in Afghanistan. Assistance to Iraqi people to rebuild their country.
Adopt a new foreign policy of diplomacy and respect for all nations, instead of preemptive war for corporate interests. Renew commitment to UN peace role.
End trade policies that enrich corporations while destroying jobs. Ratify Kyoto Treaty and other climate change agreements.
Enforce nuclear non-proliferation, work to abolish nuclear weapons. Cut Pentagon spending in half, close down US bases around the world.
Vote November 4 as if your life, and your future, depend on it!
Defeating the right wing is the first step in the struggle to end exploitation, poverty, racism and war inherent in capitalism.

NO president in modern history has even tried to secure the border. Explain that one.
Not a good beat, nor can you dance to it! I give it a tres en una escala de diez.
Each thinks that if ignored the illegals will vote for their party in return. Add to that the attraction of cheap labor.
