Yep, those Indians at Foxwood (in Conn.)are no longer on welfare. One of my cousins married a native girl from near Sacramento whose tribe owns the Thundervalley Casino (by Roseville) the last I heard she was getting over $50,000 a month (not a year, a MONTH, that's every tribal member)

"the 1703 lease was with the English government and not the US or state government."

A civil war is not a pretext to abrogate a treaty with a third party.

“It’s a humiliating, degrading and insensitive process. Why do Indian people have to go through that? No other peoples are treated like that.”

Next time, don’t take the beads.

What is with America that all of a sudden we are dismantling the country? 0bambi cedes a part of AZ to Mexico, the courts give 750 acres to an Indian tribe, Hawaii is getting a separtist government, etc.

CW2 has started and no one told us.

Agree with you (Choctaw here), however, the reservation system sucks! Look at the Rosebud or Pineridge.

The drug and Alcohol abuse is terribel, 98% unemployment and I won’t even go into the sexual abuse on those rez’s.

I think people are just frustrated with the whole thing. I am all for tribes making money. But they really need to deal with these problems. Washington is not the answer.

Dismantling the country? Because they give federal recognition to a tribe of less than 2k, with 750 acres? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

Tribes as sovereign nations have a government to government relationship with the US. They are our strongest allies, and they send the majority of their members into our military, where they make the most disciplined and fearless servicemen and women. It costs us very little to support our tribes, and maintain good relations with them. I’d much rather work on their entitlement programs than pour money into the ERs of this nation, treating illegals who do nothing for us other than run weed-whackers across our lawns.

Yep, alot of people don’t understand that. They think reservations are places where people lie around and suck up oxygen and take an ocassional swig from the bottle. So not the case. Some of our tribes are so highly organized and politically powerful, it astounds me. We could learn a few things from them on economics and social organization.

The way it has been communicated to me is that this is their country, so its their job to defend it. They merely allow non-NAs fight along side them. ;-)

The decision means that the Shinnecock, numbering some 1,300 members, many of whom live in deep poverty compared with their wealthy neighbours, can apply for federal funding to build schools, health centres and set up their own police force.

You wanna be a semi-sovereign nation? Fine. Go create your own damned currency or open up a casino and pay for it yourselves.

And the greatest shame, and damage, done to this once proud people is that there is no need for many to become productive citizens on their own, because the Great White Father in Washington will care for their every need (very poorly).... cradle to grave... while the libs are so proud of their “caring and compassion.”

“They have no idea that Cherokee villages were more advanced than the typical village in England,”.

Interesting, might I ask for some references or further data.

The history of New World Indigenous Peoples intersts me due to the lack of technological advance found elsewhere, and the failure to adopt it when introduced.

The discovery of Jomon period Japanese wheeled articles in Mexico is a case in point. Why didn’t the wheel get used?

“.. or that Meso-Americans had technology that rivaled that of Europe as well.”

What technology? No use of metals, even though somebody removed umpteen thousand tons of metallic copper from the Michigan deposits. So far, only copper ceremonial ingots have been found.

As for Liberals being insensitive bachelor’s children - that is part of their job description.

So much for why Liberals act as they do towards your Indian aspect. Now, onward to the Pubbies.

Racism and entitlement are not social constructs thought well of among the FR population.

The reason Pubbies look down on Indians and other racially entitled” groups is that THEY ARE WELFARE & RACE BASED ENTITLEMENT SEEKERS.

It all changed in Alaska in 60's when the govt brought in the money based economy to the villages. That quickly turned into a welfare based economy but that wasn't the original plan. Now the govt is content on giving them some little scraps of money; just enough that they will drink themselves to death; no different than genocide. There were 400 Indians in our village 100 years back, now 30 remain and hardly any kids.

The govt will load them all in a big landing craft, give them a boat ride 50 miles downriver to one of their original seasonal villages and have a party. The Indians are happy. I tell them: Are they giving you the land back or blowing smoke up your butt; that makes them realize what really is going on. The govt will never give them the land back, bottom line.

I know and get along with all the Indians in our village; good bunch of people who can't seem to surmount the alcohol problem; and they are going extinct over it.

As for being Indian, you are Indian if you have some Indian blood in you and have been raised Indian. Many Indian women get 86'd out of their village due to alcohol. They go into Anch and pop out 2-3 half breed kids then go back to village. The Indians always accept the half White kids and raise them with the luv & care all kids should get. The White relatives don't want anything to do with them. Who is the better people?

In Canada, Indians have to work 20 hrs a week to receive welfare. Most prefer finding a real 40 hr/wk job and become up standing members of the community over it.

Also remember there is alot of problems in their heads over what has occurred to their people over the last 100 years. Some drink to cover the pain they see in their villages and lives. Most Indians lose half their kids to alcohol as young people.

In Alaska, Yukon River villages suffer some of the highest abuse & suicide rates found anywhere; sad places. It doesn't have to be that way. The govt prefers it that way. We should follow the Canadian approach to the Indian dilemma, rather than just wanting the problem to go away by dying out as a people.

My comment was NOT specific to this case! It was in reference to a growing trend of ceding sovereignty. Like the area in AZ where Americans can’t go safely. And the Hawaiian separtist movement. This ruling is simply the latest ceding.

Its kind of sad to see what has happened to the younger ones. My friend out on the Copper said the same thing, that the young ones get on welfare, drink and watch TV.

The govt will load them all in a big landing craft, give them a boat ride 50 miles downriver to one of their original seasonal villages and have a party.

They do the 'culture camp' on the Yukon too? They have one south of Slana, off Nabesna Rd, where it got taken over by the park. The park service has been trying to get some of their land off the Copper too. A few years back I was told they went on one of their burning sprees there, taking out old cabins that were not on public land. Check out the book 'Land Gone Lonesome', great read, sounds like they did quite a bit of that around the Yukon/Charley area.

In retrospect it would have been better perhaps to have them assimilate rather than not. However...

I think there was a substantial effort to do so in some places at times, and it was met with different results. Tribes/nations responded much differently.

It became easier to wall them off when they wouldn’t assimilate.

If another country invaded the United States and prevailed, would your community and families fight to the death or would you surrender in an effort to save some of the people (women and children, mainly), that you might have an existence going forward however bleak, as opposed to being a valiant, hostile memory?

If you chose surrender, then found you could no longer worship your God or speak your language, had to change your customs and way of subsistence, would you readily assimilate?

As a Christian I know to deny Christ is to be condemned in the next life, though I might save myself in this one. The many tribes faced such issues you and I only speculate about.
