US President Barack Obama's Republican foes on Tuesday forced a largely symbolic one-week delay in a key Senate panel's vote on his second US Supreme Court pick, Elena Kagan.
The US Senate Judiciary Committee will now take up the nomination on July 20, when the panel is set to send it to the full Senate for all-but-certain confirmation as just the fourth woman to reach the highest US court.
The justices serve lifetime terms as the final arbiters of the US Constitution, setting precedents for all US courts and adjudicating bitter disputes, often in narrow 5-4 rulings that can take a generation to reverse.

How?
We can pray something happens between now and then to derail this thing. I can’t even begin to stomach the thought of kagan on this court. Maybe the pubbies found something they need to delve further in to that will turn this around.
Yeah. I’m dreaming. I know.
Kagan simply stinks. A handful of brave GOP senators need to filibuster this nominee. The more people learn about this leftist, the worse her poll numbers are. She is wildly unqualified in terms of experience. Even in the academic world of the Sixties, Kagan would have been lucky to receive tenure since she has done so little — her entire career is predicated upon radical feminism that came to pass a decade later.
//The longer this plays out, the better for the GOP//
Maybe the tide will turn against her. I can only hope, because if she gets in it will be a genuine travesty for the constitution.
“The final arbiters of the U.S. Constitution” are the people.
We are getting played. The GOP is trying to make it look like a “struggle” while they figure out just how many Senators they can free-up to vote “nay” while maintaining their precious Senate Comity.
“and Republicans have shown no sign they plan to use parliamentary delay tactics that require 60 votes to break.”
This witch needs to be FILIBUSTERED!!
If they won’t try to block her, Obama could nominate the Reverend Wright to SCOTUS and get away with it.

SNED THE GOP MEMBERS LETETERS. E-MAILS AND PHONE CALLS!!
They ALL need an infusion of Courage and some not-too tender exhortations to filibuster her appointment.

If Orin Hatch is a "no" vote, that puts a lot of pressure on other moderate Republicans. Collins, Snowe and Brown are sure-bet "yes" votes. That means the GOP has to pick up a few Dems if they want to be able to filibuster. They need that 2A smoking gun.
McConnell needs to be fired if he can’t rein in these 3 rogue Republicans. I’m surprised they voted against the Health Bill, there seems to be nothing Republican about any of them.
Just a question for all of the participants on this thread.
When was the last time you saw a brand new president get to name two Supreme Court justices in his first 18 months in office?
Nixon came VERY close, and perhaps may have matched this feat. He certainly appointed three in his first term: Burger, Blackman and Powell, with Rehnquist being installed in his 2nd term (I think, although that might have been a 1st Term pick, too).
Eisenhower picked a bunch as well - maybe as many as six. And of course, FDR was the most prolific.
Bill Clinton.
Burger and Blackmun were both confirmed by May 197. Blackmun was Nixon’s third choice for Fortas’s vacancy; he had nominated Clement Haynsworth back in May 1969, so Nixon made nominations for two SCOTUS vacancies in his first six months in office.
And Clinton appointed Ginsburg in 1993 and Breyer in May 1994 (he was confirmed in early August).
Thanks for the information. I had also forgotten about Clinton's two appointees. For some reason, I thought Breyer came after the mid-terms, but apparently not.
Had Breyer come after the midterms, the confirmation hearings would have been a lot more interesting. : )
Clinton was lucky to get his two vacancies in 1993 and 1994 when his party still controlled the Senate (they would lose control a few months later), and G.W. Bush was lucky to get his two vacancies in 2005 when the GOP had just increased its Senate majority to 53 seats (and before President Bush became unpopular and the Democrats could smell blood).
Traitors, all of them and McConnell sucks.
