Big Brother is coming: NSA's $1.9 billion cyber spy center a power grab
DESERET NEWS ^ | 12/20/2009 | Chuck Gates

"By the very nature of the intelligence business, it is difficult to discuss much of the NSA mission." — National Security Agency Web site

In this post-Sept. 11 world, plans by the National Security Agency to construct a colossal $1.9 billion information storage center at Camp Williams could be considered a power trip.

But it's not the sort of power trip that keeps civil libertarians lying awake at night.

No, this power grab is for the stuff of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla — the juice needed to keep acres of NSA supercomputers humming and a cyber eye peeled for the world's bad guys.

Nearly a decade into the new millennium, America's spy agency is power gridlocked at its sprawling Fort Meade, Md., headquarters. The NSA, which devours electricity the same way teenage boys wolf down french fries at McDonald's, has been forced to look elsewhere to feed its ravenous AC/DC appetite.

"At the NSA, electrical power is political power. In its top-secret world, the coin of the realm is the kilowatt," writes national security authority and author James Bamford.

It's a simple equation: More data coming in means more reports going out. More reports going out means more political clout for the agency, Bamford writes. Story continues below

Intelligence historian and author Matthew M. Aid considers the NSA's quest for power a driving factor in the NSA's selection of Camp Williams, which covers 28,000 acres bordering Utah and Salt Lake counties.

There's been some speculation that the Camp Williams facility dovetails with the NSA's controversial attempts to further establish itself as the lead dog for the government's expanding cybersecurity initiatives, although NSA officials aren't tipping their hand.

"I can't get into some of the specific details of the kind of work that will go on at the center because it is a critical aspect of the way we are looking at doing cybersecurity going forward," Gaffney said in his best NSA-ese. "I can say that the reason why we are doing the center is because of the deep level of technical expertise that's needed to understand the nature of the threats."

Given the NSA's penchant for speaking little and revealing less, it sounds like he's saying, "Trust us."

Sometimes I wonder why even bother with this when our country is being destroyed from within. What’s worse — a few truck bombs or a total rewrite of society and the Constitution?

this stuff has been going on forever and will continue.

I don't like it, but I can't stop it. And as far as we know, it's not been abused. Some will argue that point, but I don't see people being dragged away all the time and this has never come up in discovery for normal everyday folks.

google echelon , it's not a rumor. It's quite real. We just don't really know the specifics. As the general flow of data increases, these newer and smarter systems will come online. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=nsa+echelon&aq=f&aqi=g3&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

First the CIA high-tails it to Colorado.

Now the NSA is finding it necessary to move to Utah.

Nothing going on here, move along...

I agree, I feel exactly the same way. I think it’s over. The republic is on life support now and it doesn’t look good. We were asleep at the wheel and I really think there is nothing we can do to save it short of an all out revolution which I imagine will happen in the future. We need term limits and we need them now but it will never happen until all hell breaks lose. We need to kick the commies out of the country. Screw them. If they like Communism they can head on down to Venezuela or Cuba.

Well enjoy it. I won’t be here for them to spy on. Where I’m moving they don’t do this kind of sh*t.

What if you are using an email service that encrypts your emails. Can they still see them? I have nothing to hide however I feel this is an extreme violation of privacy.

What happened to all the Democrats who screamed ‘Unconstitutional!’ when the NSA tapped into cell phone conversations in Pakistan?

there really isn't anything the nsa cannot decrypt.

I don't know if they are doing it real-time for email and things, that would take huge amounts of resources... all I can say is they do have the capability.

few people know details about what the nsa does. We know echelon exists and can (and does) monitor pretty much all voice conversations (this includes satellite linked calls as well) and electronic transmissions in real-time... and we know it's a multi-national cooperative headed up by the nsa, but we really don't know it's inner workings. Everything else is mostly speculation or guessing.

We know they stumble on a lot of "chatter" coming from terrorists... I'd be willing to place a bet that most of it comes from this program.
