Tea Party Favorite Loses GOP Runoff in Alabama (Barber loses)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A mainstream Republican rolled past a tea party activist Tuesday in the GOP runoff for a southeast Alabama congressional seat that Republicans hope to reclaim.

Montgomery City Councilwoman Martha Roby was drawing 60 percent in the unofficial count in the 2nd Congressional District GOP runoff Tuesday against Rick Barber, a former Marine who operates a Montgomery pool hall that hosts tea party meetings.

Roby will face conservative Democratic U.S. Rep. Bobby Bright in the fall. Bright's win in 2008 marked the first time the GOP had lost the seat since 1964.

In the 2nd District, Roby, 34, promised to bring ''common sense conservative values'' to Congress. But Barber, 35, who has no political track record, described her as a ''status quo'' candidate, the daughter of a federal judge appointed by President Ronald Reagan.

Looking to see if this was already posted I saw a thread about a Barber campaign commercial.

"Rick Barber unleashes a new ad in his bid for Congress that shows him sitting around the table with George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Sam Adams. Barber calls for the impeachment of Obama while listing grievances such as the progressive income tax and healthcare"

Maybe the local voters didn't think it cool he put himself on the same tier as Washington and Franklin, or didn't like his choice of a yuppie beer like Sam Adams.

In any event, I'd 86 the impeachment commercials. Totally premature. I'm surprised he even made the runoff.

Well he was a longshot to win so I can’t blame him for going for the shock value ad.

doesn’t matter as long as they get rid of the “conservative” democrat who probably votes right on issues when queen nancy has the votes in her pocket but who is there for her when he is really needed

Surely the idea that a vote for a dem is a vote for nancy will resonate in a district that was Republican for 4 decades before 2008.

“doesn’t matter as long as they get rid of the “conservative” democrat who probably votes right on issues when queen nancy has the votes in her pocket but who is there for her when he is really needed”

That is an accurate description of the “conservative “ democrat. There really is no such thing. We need them and all the RINOs’ gone so we know what we’ve got!!

This is probably the 1st time in history the New York Times has ever reported on the 2nd Congressional District of Alabama.

There has to be a "joke line" or at least official notice of the oxymoron: Democratic U.S. Rep. Bobby Bright.

The thing is, when you’re running to keep a safe GOP seat in Kentucky, or against the poster-child of the 0bama agenda in Nevada, you can afford to nominate the Tea Party underdog. But if the opponent is a conservative Democrat, and the incumbent, then it is much smarter to nominate the more electable Republican, so long as it isn’t a RINO. This nomination ensures one more loss for the Democrats in November.

Bingo! The “Upper West Side”-controlled media loves nothing more than to report an anti-conservative story, even if they have to hold their noses and go down to rural Alabama to get that story.

Big deal. If the mainstream Republican candidate is conservative, I really don’t care if the Tea Party candidate lost. In fact, I’d rather see conservatives become the “mainstream” in the GOP once again, rather than fritter away our strength dividing ourselves between those “evil, horrible” mainstream Republicans and the good, noble, virtuous Tea Party candidates.
