A new poll shows Arizona Sen. John McCain widening his lead over his Republican challenger ahead of next month's GOP primary.
The Rocky Mountain Poll released Wednesday shows McCain leading former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth 64 percent to 19 percent. Political newcomer Jim Deakin had 5 percent.
McCain's margin has widened from a 54 percent to 28 percent lead he held over Hayworth in the same poll in April.
The telephone poll was conducted by the Behavior Research Center between June 30 and July 11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points. Pollsters surveyed a random sample of 334 registered Arizona voters, including 190 Republicans and 144 independents who said they would vote in the Republican primary.

I gave J.D. the most money I’ve ever given to a candidate. I’m considering giving him one more shot in the arm. Would it make a difference at this stage?
J.D. never gives a relaxed, toothy smile for the camera. McCain does. That’s gotta be worth a couple percentage points all on its own.

When is Hayworth going to spend some of that money? McCain's been wall-to-wall anti-Hayworth commercials, but when's JD going to return fire? Negative Hayworth attitudes and perceptions are settling against JD now, and there's been nothing to stop the tidal wave.

I just think we didn’t have a good horse to run against McCain. I’ve never been a fan of Hayworth, he’s a for show politician. I can live with McCain for another term. If he hasn’t learned his lesson now he won’t be around long enough for us to care. I’d like to see someone like Deakin win. He is a solid non politician. It is amazing to see people let their hatred of McCain drive them to latch onto anything even a retred politician who did infomercials for “free govt money”. He also voted for a pilot of CAP and Trade. Hayworth might be a tad more conservative than McCain but he sure as hell isn’t an “honest injun” outsider.
I know it makes folks angry but I’m not wasting my money defeating McCain. I will however help Christine ODonnell who seems to be growing in popularity in Delaware against Mike Castle who is just about the most worthless Republican ever.
I don’t believe McCain is going to win by the huge margin he is showing in this poll. I do believe that if folks had put their money behind a candidate who didn’t have the baggage of Hayworth McCain would probably be in really big trouble. Deakin was in it from the beginning, he is a Sharron Angle, Rand Paul type of candidate and a win by him wouldn’t have the same dividing potential as a win by Hayworth which the media would make into a mockery of the tea party.
My two cents. This race won’t rise or fall on my opinion. I’ve seen some races go no where no matter how hard a candidate ran or how good they were. The media is to blame in some cases, they are very good at building a protective firewall to shut out candidates they don’t like or don’t take seriously. I’ve seen it here in VA. Sometimes it even benefits Republicans. Sometimes it is extremely unfair such as with are liberal Senator Mark Warner and Jim Webb. Both owe their positions to the NVA media machine and big spending Rhino Republicans.

All Senate seats matter to all of us if we value the Supreme Court and value the legislation that is passed but since McCain is on his good behavior I’d rather the seat remain in the R column till a worthy replacement rises. Hayworth isn’t a worthy replacement. McCain has towed the line religiously of late. I would happily have him replaced with a real Tea Party candidate but right now the should be Tea Party candidate Deakin doesn’t appear to be going anywhere and Hayworth appears to be headed to join Deakin rather than gaining on McCain.
Regardless I think we have better places to spend our money. We should have had a slate of solid Tea Party candidates running this year. Instead we are going to have about a third of what we could have had because of clouding our message and not showing up when hard work is necessary to help a candidate that might not have name recognition or money to win. We wait for polls to validate the worth of our choices when the people being polled don’t have any idea who they are being polled on.
Obama is merely a Soros sock puppet. McCain, on the other hand, is an out-and-out traitor!

Wait until the debate tonight. Interesting they CHOSE to run this poll today. But it’s an uphill battle for JD. He has not run a good campaign so far. But I believe it starts tonight.

Frankly, the only thing I can think of that McCain is good for is that he adds another "R" to the column, helping to take the Senate away from the Dems, and helping to give people like Jim DeMint extra clout by being in the majority party.
But even then, this only helps us if the GOP gets a large enough majority that a McCain switch to the Dems wouldn't negate it. And that is EXTREMELY unlikely to happen, at least in this cycle.
Just watched the debates. McCain looked like a weak, old, lying, fool. JD took him apart. McCain denounced earmarks repeatedly and then used 3 of his responses to talk about all the pork he’s brought to AZ. What an idiot. Go JD!
Here’s hoping that all the voters watching last night got the same impression!
