The study suggests that some people may end up voting for left of centre parties because they hold the mistaken belief that they are left wing…
“The most startling result is that the more educated tend to believe that they are more left-wing than they are measured as being,” said Dr Rockey. “That is, well-educated individuals are more likely to think that they are quite left-wing but actually believe things that compared to the rest of the population would make them comparatively right-wing.
“The analysis suggests that the cause of this is different to the effect of gender, income, or job type. Other results suggest that men and those with higher-incomes are more likely to both think that they are rightwing and to be measured as such.”
Dr Rockey said one speculative explanation is that people may hold on to their perception that they have left-wing views, but that over time as their circumstances and social network changes their actual political opinions drift rightwards.

The great Democratic voting block, the alliance of the over-educated and the under-educated. I call them the brainwashed and the propagandized. Their parents laid out big dollars to get them to a “good school” where the tenure track was captured by mediocre but highly politicized minds. No conservatives professors allowed in the social sciences. So they have a self-referential echo chamber within academia filled with weak thinkers. To get tenure you have to be too stupid to see through the lies or too dishonest to care.
First, highly educated does not mean one is highly intelligent.
Second, there are plenty of fields of study that are not very challenging.
Third, there IS a level of stupidity so great that it can only be achieved through higher education.

As a conservative academic I can tell you this is a powerfully true insight. It’s groupthink at it’s near worst.
This is a prominent conundrum with the Afro-American population. The vast majority go for the Rat even when the Pub mirrors their personal views far better.
It suggests a key out of the conundrum, though. Some awareness raising may be in order, though perhaps a bit more subtle than “DID YOU KNOW YOU MAY BE A SECRET RIGHT WINGER?!?”

I watched this phenomenon for over 30 years among union members I worked with who were pro small government, anti welfare state, pro gun, pro life, vote the rat ticket every time.
I’ve done this before, unsurprisingly they attacked the test when it revealed that they weren’t left wing at all.
Most liberals are very conservative with THEIR money. Most liberals are very conservative about THEIR daughters having sex with anyone. Most liberals are very conservative when it comes to paying (or NOT paying as the case may be Mr. Geithner) THEIR taxes.
When it comes to YOUR money, YOUR daughter, and YOUR taxes, well then, anything goes!

Thanks. I’ve known plenty of them too, and they’re unbearable when arrogant. I’ve also known many who were extremely bright.
To me, one of the most important things I took from school was a perspective that there is a lot more that I don’t know than things that I do, and a methodology to figuring things out.
Most liberals I’ve had the displeasure of knowing tend to think they know it all.
I think it’s because liberals believe they have reached their maximum personal growth both in knowledge and spirit and thus are no longer required to learn additional information about themselves or the world around them..thus as you said, they are know it alls:)
