Israel inched a step closer recently to deploying a missile defense system along the border with the Gaza Strip after the Iron Dome system successfully intercepted a number of missile barrages in tests.

The tests were overseen by the Defense Ministry, the Israel Air Force and the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. which developed the Iron Dome, slated to be declared operational in the near future.

The missile barrages that the system succeeded in intercepting included a number of rockets that mimicked Kassam and longer-range Gradmodel Katyusha rockets that are known to be in Hamas’s arsenal.

The Iron Dome is supposed to be capable of intercepting all of the short-range rockets in fired by Hamas in the Gaza Strip and by Hizbullah in southern Lebanon. The Iron Dome uses an advanced radar – made by Elta – that locates and tracks the rocket, which is then intercepted by a kinetic missile interceptor.

During the test, the radar succeeded in detecting which rockets were headed towards coordinates that were designated as open fields and therefore did not launch an interceptor to destroy them.

The IDF has already established a new battalion that will be part of the IAF’s Air Defense Division and will operate the Iron Dome. Prototypes of the Iron Dome have already been supplied to the new battalion, which has commenced training with the systems.

I take it “kinetic missile interceptor” refers to the interceptor, not the missile it is supposed to intercept. That the interceptor is just a dumb piece of iron once it has been shot.

I hope Rafael has a trick or two still up their sleeve when faced with missiles that can dodge. The interceptor will need some more smarts.

this depiction really doesn’t say much more one way or the other. hopefully the “faster missile” can maneuver if it has to, also if it misses that it has a way of sending itself to a harmless destination. (unless they WANT it to hit back, hint hint)

I was hoping a visual depiction would work.

much better... yes the interceptor locks the target missile and can maneuver.

Since the Israelis don’t have the guts anymore to attack first, since they rollover to public opinion, they build a costly system that allows them to stay on the defensive. The muzzies are happy about this.....Israel spends its money and doesn’t hurt the muzzies with it. Hell each piece of shiite rocket Gaza puts up will cost pennies on the dollar compared to the Israeli shoot down.

Take over Gaza and kill everyone there who hates you....OR...wait till they do that to YOU.

The incoming missile would have to know when to dodge. It cannot sense the interceptor. If the incoming missile maneuvers randomly, it sacrifices accuracy and range.

Obviously, this system only works against very dumb threats, but that is all Hezbollah has gotten from Iran.
