You Must Love the EPA—Or Else!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency comes as close to George Orwell’s version of Big Brother as any element of the federal government. It operates on a totally irrational basis, ignoring anything that even passes for real science. Through its regulatory power imposes insane mandates that drive up the cost of everything and is trying to drive major elements of energy provision out of business.

What, for example, is the EPA doing offering “tips to protect eyes, skin from the Sun’s harmful rays”? Does the EPA sell sunscreen products?

...Charged with keeping the U.S. waters clean, why has the EPA launched a “National Water Conservation Campaign” complete with tips such as checking the toilet for “silent leaks” or replacing your showerhead with a “WaterSense labeled model.” Do we really need the EPA in the business of approving some showerheads over others?

The answer is that the EPA wants to be involved with all aspects of people’s lives and sees no limits on its authority or power and it wants you to love it for all the effort it is making to save you from a horrible death.

Recently the EPA classified milk as oil! How crazed is that???

It based this on the fact milk contains animal fat which is a non-petroleum oil. The result is that dairy farming has become even more costly and you can bet the costs will be passed on to consumers. While the Gulf of Mexico is polluted by millions of gallons of oil from the BP disaster, Frank Konkel of Silver Sky Dairy in Hesperia, Michigan, and all other dairy farmers will have to develop and implement spill prevention plans for milk storage tanks. The rules are set to take effect in November.

...The tentacles of the EPA reach into every enterprise in the nation.

The EPA types are “true believers” of the worst kind. I hesitate to belabor the grossly overused “enviro-Nazi” analogy but anyone who has had to deal with them first hand will know it is just about right.

And if the sheeple ever wake the hell up, they will treat these ‘Nazi’ just like the previous ones were dealt with.....

Some of the later chapters of Unintended Consequences touch on this topic.

2010-stopped.

2012-defunded to 1980 levels.

That’s how to get my vote.

"Does the EPA sell sunscreen products?"

No; but I'm sure their big-buck donors do, and all the EPA does is to pass regulations that benefit big-buck donors, OR, to pass rules that pass more costs to consumers as a hidden tax, without being called a "tax". It's called the cost of doing business, and they just use the businesses to create the cash flow from consumers.

Charged with keeping the U.S. waters clean

Even that was only navigable waterways so commerce was not impeded, started out as clear not clean, then came the drinking water standards.

They’re becoming the poster child of Commerce Clause abuse.

In 1985 I was looking for a job and a friend arranged an appointment for me with an EPA office in Denver. When I arrived, I sat outside the office, as a conversation was going on inside, and I did not want to intrude. I could not help but overhear the conversation, which was centered on ways to return a mine to natural condition.

In a few minutes, one of the participants in the conversation left, and I was ushered in to the office. As a freshly minted owner of an MS degree, I though I might make a couple of points by making a suggestion that I had considered when I inadvertently overheard their discussion. I said that I had overheard what was said, and that I had an idea that might save them considerable money if implemented.

The EPA representative stopped me at the point. In a clear and proud voice, he intoned “At the EPA, WE are not concerned with cost.”

At that point, I was sure that I did not want to work for the EPA.

The company I work for is being forced to hire a new environmental officer just to deal with all the new reg’s and other BS being put upon us. Thanks Government!
