When the main purpose of state and local government becomes rewarding the public sector unions, who kick back some of the loot to the Democratic party, there is less money for maintaining necessary infrastructure. What are the hundreds of billions of stimulus dollars and gas tax revenues being used for?

"I'd rather my kids drive on a gravel road than stick them with a big tax bill," said Bob Baumann, as he sipped a bottle of Coors Light at the Sportsman's Bar Café and Gas in Spiritwood.

Unfortunately, Bob, your kids will not only be driving on a gravel road, but will be stuck with a huge tax bill as well. The downside of electing democRATS and RINOs.

Counties in ... Pennsylvania have begun downgrading asphalt roads to cheaper chip-and-seal road, also known as "poor man's pavement."

The real news here is that PA roads were ever anything better than chip-and-seal.

I remember when the clinton’s used to drone on and on about “it’s for the children” why they did anything. Now the libs have kicked the kids under the bus and made it all about themselves.

As Jeff Foxworthy used to say: "If the directions to your house include the words 'when you come to the end of the pavement,' you might be a redneck.

By that definition, I am one; I live on a one mile long gravel loop road which circles a small lake. In addition to the typical gravel road problems (dusty cars, even dusty houses for those who are close to the road), the road is so hilly that any significant rain will cause erosion and gullies in the roadway. The State DOT regrades and regravels the road at least three times a year. Clearly, it would be cheaper in the long run to pave it.

One problem is that some of the residents don't want the road paved, on the grounds that to do so would make the neighborhood lose its "rustic charm," and that the gravel road encourages low driving speeds (20-25 mph). Personally, I think they just want excuses to have Range Rovers and Hummers.

Question: "What are the hundreds of billions of stimulus dollars and gas tax revenues being used for?"

Answer: Providing equal incomes for women and minorites! Plus endless vacations with ice cream for The Divine One.

Some counties in Ohio are simply letting roads erode to gravel.

Not the county where I live. I moved back to this county 12 years ago and all the roads around the area where I live were in terrible shape. They were never repaired...rarely received a band aid fix and remained nearly unnavigable UNTIL these signs went up:

Photobucket

Of course it will be difficult to "Put America to Work" in this county, as a majority are on welfare.

Today one has a difficult time getting around this area for at least a 10 mile radius due to ALL the roads being resurfaced, widened, played with for whatever reason and a new over pass installed on a small short connector road that has little to nothing on it -- all at the same time.

Of course there is little reason to traverse this area as there are few businesses left to generate traffic and has been placed in the Appalachian Regional Commission's "capable" hands.

Think of all the cars of S. Cal roads....Probably 42,000,000 of them...All paying an average of probably $150. a year in state registrations and taxes.

WTF are they doing with this mountain of money?

Then throw in billions state sales taxes etc....

WTF are they doing with the money?

But higher taxes for road maintenance are equally unpopular.

Everyone is already taxed to death.

The truth is the state public unions, who own the Democrat party, steal all the money for salaries, benefits, and pensions.....leaving almost nothing for the basic services (trash collection, road repair, snow removal, etc) that they should be performing.

Obviously, the high cost of government salaries, health care, and rich lifetime pensions doesn’t leave much taxpayer money left over for things like roads.

Exactly. They need to take another look at that budget and find out who’s getting all the money.
