W.Va. special election for Byrd's Senate seat set
Posted: Jul 20, 2010 7:42 AM EDT
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A last-minute legislative compromise has cleared the way for a November election to fill the late Robert C. Byrd's U.S. Senate seat.
The measure, which sets an Aug. 28 primary and Nov. 2 general election, was passed 83-7 by the House and 29-0 by the Senate.
The compromise allows Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to run both for Byrd's seat and a sixth U.S. House term. She's considered the GOP's top prospect for winning the seat.
Gov. Joe Manchin has said it's highly likely that he'll also run. The Democrat appointed Carte Goodwin to succeed Byrd temporarily on Friday.
The bill had to pass during Monday's special session to apply this fall. It also limits the discretion allowed Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, whose office oversees the special election.
Part time? Try dozens of extended stays over a period of more than 20 years. Ever heard a saying called "Hit dog hollers". You're hollering real loud, partner. Instead of shooting the messenger, why not work on cleaning up your own house?
Why are you attacking WV instead of the democrats?
I'm not "attacking" anyone. I'm just relating what I've experienced while working all over West Virginia over a period of more than 20 years, along with each time I go there to visit my in laws for the past 11 years. You want to know another common sight in West Virginia I've seen so many times I've lost count? Women wearing sunglasses to cover up black eyes from spousal abuse. Yeah, West Virginia is a wonderful place, indeed. BTW, West Virginia is and has been DOMINATED by Democrats for DECADES and therein lies your problem. The politicians you folks continue to elect and re-elect are some of the most corrupt in the USA, both on the local and national stage. Go ahead. Defend Rockefeller and Sheets Byrd whydontcha......gimme a few minutes while I go pop some popcorn......
Maybe you associate with a different type of people than I do. Your time in WVa is like an instant compared with the many years I have lived here, and I have never yet seen a woman covering up black eyes with sun glasses. I don’t go to bars, etc.
Have you ever taken a look at the slums of any major city in the USA? Evidently not, or you would not be making an issue of the small number of, admittedly tragic, poverty stricken people of WVa. But neighbors care for each other here, and that is not so common in other places.
Watch that popcorn, you might drop some leftover venom in it.
Thank you, WVNan. It gets old seeing our state misrepresented.
Precisely my point and why I said you need to get out more. In my travels with my work I have visited 49 states and over 20 countries. I've worked in south central LA, the south side of Chicago, Queens, the south side of Miami, and many other blighted places. Cell carriers rarely put cell sites in ritzy neighborhoods. I've also worked in many 3rd world countries, like Nicaragua, Brazil and several countries in eastern Europe, just to name a few. West Virginia, especially the coal field in the SW part of the state, is the closest thing to third world I've experienced in the USA. If you think West Virginia is so great you REALLY need to get out and see how the rest of the world lives. I've seen your state from one end to the other. I've met the people and I know what I've experienced. Again, before you shoot the messenger you should broaden your own horizons a wee bit.....

That is ridiculous. Neighbors, church groups, and of course the ever present Medicade, and other welfare groups make sure no one is hungry in WVa. Try finding all that assistance in Third World countries. And,yes, I do think WVa is great.
Also I can leave my doors unlocked and not worry. We have wonderful neighbors up and down the rural road where we live, and we know all of them.
Does it make you feel superior to put yourself so far above West Virginians? I, thankfully, don’t have your jaded attitude.
