"... "I've been to police and prosecutors and they all tell me there's nothing that can be done," said Wheeler.

He may be right. A spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, which handles the State Sex Offenders Database, says when someone is arrested and uses an alias, that alias is kept on file forever. The concern is that if authorities delete the alias, the criminal could go back to using it again.

Wheeler doesn't know where to turn."

He should send this newspaper clipping to his congressman, senators, governor, and state representatives.

If I was a US Senator, I would constantly be jumping right in the middle of government's business throwing my weight around like Foghorn Leghorn, visiting bureaucrats' offices and poking them in the chest saying "Ah say, ah SAY, boy! Now just a-wait a cotton-picking minute son. Look at me while I'm talking to ya, son" and scaring the living crap out of them that I'll make them the poster boy for government ineptitude.

I'd ruin people in positions of power.

Washington state may need to change its law to bring sanity into this kind of situation. Each political generation seems to have its own scarlet letter, its own unforgivable sin which excuses the most egregious callousness towards the individual without so much as a by-your-leave. Drugs (especially dealing) held the crown for a long time. Now it’s been edged out by sex offenses. You’re more likely to know if your neighbor once had an affair with a teen one year too young than you are if your neighbor was once a heroin dealer.
