Senate Democrats regret supporting Roberts, Alito
By J. Taylor Rushing - 07/23/10 06:00 AM ET
Senate Democrats are expressing regret for supporting the nominations of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito.
From the rank and file to senior members, Democrats widely said they were particularly frustrated that Roberts, during his confirmation hearings, portrayed himself as an umpire merely calling balls and strikes. Instead, they say, he has joined the far-right wing of the court and been a leading voice in recent controversial 5-4 rulings.
The representations that were made and implied turned out not to be accurate, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said of Roberts. Many of us met with him personally and tried to take his measure, and I remember worrying, Is this someone whos going to go to the far-right corner with [Antonin] Scalia and [Clarence Thomas]? Most of us were assured that wouldnt happen. Turns out thats exactly what happened.
He was one thing when he was trying to get confirmed, and he became another thing which he seemed to have planned all along, said Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), who, like Dorgan, backed Roberts.
The Washington Post reported a few years ago that Obama initially wanted to vote for Roberts, but was talked out of it by his staff. Obama, reportedly impressed by Robertss intellect, was advised a yes vote would cripple a future presidential run. Obama subsequently voted no.

It's what we have said all along- Obama is just an empty suit.
Makes you wonder who is REALLY running the White House.
Our clueless Republicrats in Congress are so anxious to win the favor of their socialist bedmates that they’ll sit on their bums a let Kagan’s nomination breeze by like Sotomayors.
The ump also has to throw out the manager on occasion.
As opposed to Sotomayor who has been absolutely true to a fair and balanced viewpoint! /s
Guarantee ANY pubbie that supports kagen WILL have regrets, for ALL time.
What would you have them do?
It isn’t Dick Cheney, that’s for sure.
No justice since Bork has been able to say what they really feel they all have to do the circus game. These morons are surprised by that?
Quick! Name a HAPPY Democrat in the US Senate!
These people revel in regret and pessimism.
Have they forgotten how they made Mrs. Alioto cry and leave the hearing room? Those gentlemen of the Senate?
Mr. Obama? Couldn’t decide between a Classic Coke and Diet Coke. He is the 21st century example of a plum duff.
However, I hear he is superb at voting “present”.
I heard "paper or plastic?" used to tie up the grocery store lines for hours...
1) Does the president want this person?
2) Is this person a well-qualified judge?
With Bork (and for everyone who came after), the whole standard changed:
1) Is this person a radical Leftist?
2) If not, can we destroy them and force them to withdraw?
This is all a bunch of hooey, and is designed to deflect criticism from the bee-itch Kagan.
Democrats are treating the Conservatives like the Nazis started treating the Jews before the Holocaust.
It’s a socialist tool. We’re superior, you’re inferior. We’re smart, you’re stupid. We are fair, you are greedy.
The conservatives can no longer capitulate. We must hold the line and fight back. Soon the Constitution will not matter at all. When that happens, violence will follow.
I don’t know what the Republicans can do on Kagan.
Dems already have a fillibuster proof majority.
The only change in that seat is that a 90 year old man is being replaced by a younger woman. Stevens was not a swing vote.
The real battle will be when Kennedy retires. This is why Roberts was confirmed with a larger majority- he was replacing a reliable conservative on the court.
Alito’s nomination was more controversial, because he was replacing a swing vote.
Regarding Kagan, vote against her (knowing that she will be confirmed) and move on to other battles. At least she will have to recuse herself in a dozen or so cases.
LOL!!!
Absolutely correct! It’s nothing more than that.
I think this article is a piece of propaganda tripe whose aim is to soften those mushy moderates into supporting a Kagan vote with this thinking, “Oh those poor Democrats, forced to vote for Roberts who are now living with regret and guilt. That is just the way it goes. Everyone knows Congress sheeple are just to go along with the Executive choices. Those neanderthal Republicans in Congress now, better remember to do the same.”
What a nauseating piece of propaganda!
Yes, I remember Bork, but do you think the 30 and undergroup (you know the hope and change, clueless voters remember?
Not enough people realize that we're living through the whole "When they came for the Jews, I did not speak up because I was not a Jew ..." scenario.
The Left has picked out enemies and positions and is taking no prisoners. Conservatives have spent years trying to pick their battles, make common cause, and seek compromise. Now we're in the cross-hairs and no one is out there, coming to our rescue. The media was taken by the Left. The schools were taken by the Left. Banking, Cars, and Energy have been co-opted by the Left. No one will speak out for us, so we better stand up and fight back for ourselves.
