Diversity and the Myth of White Privilege
WS Journal ^ | JULY 22, 2010 | james Webb

Posted on 07/23/2010 5:50:21 AM PDT by STONEWALLS

"The NAACP believes the tea party is racist. The tea party believes the NAACP is racist. And Pat Buchanan got into trouble recently by pointing out that if Elena Kagan is confirmed to the Supreme Court, there will not be a single Protestant Justice, although Protestants make up half the U.S. population and dominated the court for generations.

Forty years ago, as the United States experienced the civil rights movement, the supposed monolith of White Anglo-Saxon Protestant dominance served as the whipping post for almost every debate about power and status in America. After a full generation of such debate, WASP elites have fallen by the wayside and a plethora of government-enforced diversity policies have marginalized many white workers. The time has come to cease the false arguments and allow every American the benefit of a fair chance at the future.

I have dedicated my political career to bringing fairness to America's economic system and to our work force, regardless of what people look like or where they may worship. Unfortunately, present-day diversity programs work against that notion, having expanded so far beyond their original purpose that they now favor anyone who does not happen to be white.

In an odd historical twist that all Americans see but few can understand, many programs allow recently arrived immigrants to move ahead of similarly situated whites whose families have been in the country for generations. These programs have damaged racial harmony. And the more they have grown, the less they have actually helped African-Americans, the intended beneficiaries of affirmative action as it was originally conceived."

"America still owes a debt to its black citizens,..."

....the more politicians repeat this, the more blacks buy into the whole 'victimhood' mentality...and the more their demands for compensation will increase.

More than 100 relatives of mine were either killed or died from injuries fighting for the North in the Civil War. Our family has more than paid any “debt” we might have owed to blacks.

If they can go back in history to make a claim, then we can go back to refute it.

We will never get beyond Race until we just stop considering it. Look at the content of their character, not the color of their skin. I oppose quotas, affirmative action, and forced integration. The NAACP is like the Klan. Hey, it's a free country -- if you want to belong to an organization that is focused on racial supremacy, that's your business; but I reserve the right to despise you for membership in a wretched, backward, hateful organization like the NAACP.

We need to stop being afraid. We need to ignore the race card. We need to call a spade a spade. Racism is wrong. So let's stop talking about how one racial group owes a debt to another racial group. How about we just treat people like people?

Martin Luther King wanted opportunity for blacks to prove themselves, not handouts to keep them dependent on others. He knew there are millions of blacks who are perfectly capable of providing a good life for themselves and their families, but up until that time in history there were a lot of roadblocks to keep that from happening.

but up until that time in history there were a lot of roadblocks to keep that from happening.

And then Johnson's "Great Society" programs added the roadblocks of perpetual welfare, absent fathers, multiple fathers, etc., etc.

“America still owes a debt to its black citizens,...”

No, we don’t. If black Americans want money for slavery, they should go try collecting from the descendants of the black Africans who, after raiding their villages and taking them prisoner, sold them into slavery.

Hahahaha Is Webb running to the right for re-election soon? (2012?) If he really believes this stuff, how can he stand to be a Democrat. I guess he’s a socialist first.

Mr. Webb, a Democrat, is a U.S. senator from Virginia.

So if Mr Webb believes this, why did he vote for the affirmative action programs for medical schools mandated in 0bamacare? What about the set asides mandated in FinReg? Who's kidding who here Senator Webb.

I definitely don’t agree with Webb a lot of issues, namely economic “fairness”, but I think his distinction between affirmative action for blacks versus other groups is an important one. It’s at least arguable that we owe black people some sort of reparations in lieu of the promised but never received 40 acres and a mule, but there’s no justification at all for special treatment of other groups. However, Webb rightly seems skeptical of that, pointing out that a case could also be made that Southerners in general are owed reparations for the lingering damages of the Civil War.

Could not agree more with your observations. In hindsight it would seem that the election of Obama has had the exact opposite effect than was expected by the lemmings that voted for him. This professed “post-racial” president has shown his true colors again and again over the last 20 months. Be it through the set asides and preferences riddled throughout his masterpieces of legislative ineptitude or straight from the horses mouth Obama has exposed himself for what he truly is. That being grievance pimp who is out to stick it to the man at every opportunity he gets.
