Muslim workers have not agreed to proposed change to meal schedule during month-long fast

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today called on Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux to clarify a statement claiming that it will now offer legally-mandated religious accommodation to Muslim employees at its St. Cloud, Minn., plant during the upcoming Ramadan fast.

Earlier this week, CAIR-MN requested accommodation because of a new policy that prohibits all food on the production floor, except for food required by those with medical conditions such as diabetes.

Since that policy was put in place, Muslim employees, their union representatives, and CAIR-MN have worked to seek an accommodation to allow the workers to bring a snack onto the production floor to break their fast at sunset during the month of Ramadan. The time to break the fast changes daily.

In a news release distributed today by Electrolux, the company claimed it had adjusted its meal schedule so that Muslim employees would be able to break their fast at sunset.

Why is it that the rest of us citizens just MAKE accomodations without demanding that our employers make it company policy? Are you fasting? Does your employer bend over backwards for YOU? No!! Because? Yes, because YOU take care of the thing YOU need. It is your responsibility and they are not your mom.

Not so with Muslims. Their problem here becomes everyone else’s, and they are not happy until the company itself changes its rules and accommodates them. Gad, it makes my stomach churn.

But .. the company goes along with it. That’s disgusting too.

what this says is that since THEY are supposed to fast - everyone must.

This has to be unconstitutional - time to start standing up for our INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS

The local union (goons) must be really happy to know that CAIR is willing and able to go around them to negotiate privileges for some union members and not for the rest.

Or, will Electrolux have to provide the same extended time and the same snack break for all employees?

(Fair is fair)

No, just that they want to be able to bring a snack onto the production floor to break the fast.

I'd suggest that other workers also bring a small snack of bacon and chew slowly ";^)
